The split between fans of Pathfinder/D&D 3.5 and Dungeons & Dragons 4E, combined with the rehiring of d20/D&D 3.0 developer Monte Cook, have caused many fans to speculate about an upcoming 5th edition of D&D. Is there any truth to this?

I honestly think this should have been on meta as an announcement instead of a self-answering question – DForck42 Jan 9 at 17:55
I don't think enough people would see it on Meta, and it is an on-topic question, not meta. – Pureferret Jan 9 at 18:03

@Jadasc And good job securing the eventual Taxonomist badge for creating the dnd-5e tag ;) – Jonathan Drain Jan 10 at 3:27
So glad my group abandoned Wizards for Pathfinder after 3.5. – BBlake Jan 10 at 12:51
@JonathanDrain It's a fair cop. Although the commentary from WotC implies that 5e won't necessarily be called "Fifth Edition." We'll see if it catches on. – Jadasc Jan 10 at 12:55

Yes. The New York Times revealed on January 9, 2012 that a 5th edition of D&D was in the works for a release at Gen Con 2013. Mike Mearls confirmed it shortly thereafter.
