Do you roll to hit as normal, then roll to see if you do any damage or is it all in one?

Please just read the Player's Handbook. Every question you have so far asked would be answered by reading that. It explains everything. – Jonathan Hobbs Jul 16 '12 at 6:17

Also, presumably you'll be playing this game with other people. They'll be able to walk you through the basics during your first game. Some people learn better by doing than reading; if that's you, then this site won't be any better than the book until after your first game. – SevenSidedDie Jul 16 '12 at 7:12

@Luke I'd echo Seven here. The best thing to do to learn 4e is not to ask 100 basic questions here. It is to find a group and have them help you through character creation and to start playing. After that if you have specific questions we'd be happy to help you, but we can't teach you the entire game over Q&A, that's best done by starting to play. Most RPG players are incredibly friendly and want to help new people start up. We'd love to help you deepen your knowledge of 4e (or any other system). But we aren't here to teach it to you. – wax eagle Jul 16 '12 at 11:25

@Luke, you were contacted about how to get started on the site. Read the book well. Come to chat here and ask more general questions. But don't just continue to ask the same questions that got closed already. Perhaps ask a question along the lines of 'I'm getting started playing D&D 4e but am having trouble understanding the rules, what could help me?" and then people can post "find a game" with tips on how to do that physically/virtually, links to video or other walkthroughs, etc. – mxyzplk Jul 16 '12 at 12:59
