I think it's a matter of fact that since the first moment a player realizes that he or she can interact with someone of the opposite sex romantically within the game, things get hairy. I had my fair amount of dealing with sex and sexuality in my games, for example:
- a female player of mine had a female character. She bought a special d30 die to decide which day of the month she has menstruation, accepting penalties on strength, constitution and charisma on that day.
- typically, sizes of male or female attributes are decided with home-made recipes and thrown at character creation time. I had a (male) player whose (female) character specifically researched an enchantment to increase her breast size.
- various stats are used for mating and flirting purposes. Typically, Charisma or abilities (such as grades in entertain (sexuality) ). In some cases, these points are central in the development of a character (e.g. I had a very beautiful female rogue/spy and used her sex-appeal to her personal gain).
- rules for fertility and pregnancy. How long is the pregnancy period for an elf/elf, elf/human, orc/human... and let's not even think about genasi/human or dragon/human. What is the probability for abortion in case of massive damage or various saving-throw conditions (poison, sickness)
There is a book, non official from WoTC as far as I understand, the Book of Erotic Fantasy specifically made to deal with sex and sexuality, but I never had the chance to take a look at it.
My questions are:
- How do you deal with in-game sexuality, and why ? Please note that I am not referring to useless sexually-oriented discussion "just for laughs". I am referring to romance and sexual encounters that change and develop the character, eventually providing him a family, marriage, frustration, or personal strategic gain.
- Do you have home-made rules for any of the above ? Could you share these rules ?
For example, my gamemaster decided that a pregnancy of an elf is 7 years. This kicked my character into retirement for this time, allowing frustration to grow due to abandonment from the husband and father of the child (a PC human paladin with more interest in recovering an artifact than to stay with family), and allowing an old enemy to come back. This defined the premises for a new campaign, and provided an important backstory to both my character and the character of the husband. This new campaign brought my character from 14th level to 20th level, and allowed the husband to reach a semi-divine level. Yes, my gamemaster rocks.
