Example (Rogue):

Trained Skills: Stealth and Thievery. From the class skills list below, choose four more trained skills at 1st level.

Class Skills: Acrobatics (Dex), Athletics (Str), Bluff (Cha), Dungeoneering (Wis), Insight (Wis), Intimidate (Cha), Perception (Wis), Stealth (Dex), Streetwise (Cha), Thievery (Dex)

The question concerns the fact that the Rogue is Trained in Stealth and Thievery but can then 'From the class list below, CHOOSE four more trained skills' and in this List from which it says that you can Choose 4, Stealth and Thievery is included. This seems to be similar for all the classes.

So you can Train Stealth and Thievery as a choice as well have it initially trained or the equivalent for other classes?

This has bothered me as well. I know they start out with Stealth and Thievery trained, so it's confusing that they also add it to the list to choose from. – William 'MindWorX' Mariager Feb 17 at 13:11

I'm using Rogue as an Example, but this applies to all classes. However since each class's list is customized for its class it still raises the quesion of why to include the intitaly trained. – Lucifer Feb 17 at 13:28

@Lucifer I think (but a 4e expert can better answer) that it's because variants can change the default trained skills. So if some rogue variant doesn't train stealth, you can still buy back into stealth training. – C. Ross Feb 17 at 13:39
C. Ross, I understand that, and there are indeed classes which has [Skill X] or [Skill Y], but please observe that it says 'Stealth and Thievery' which (should) mean that you get both. – Lucifer Feb 17 at 13:47
Class skill list is a 'thing' a skill doesn't stop being a class skill just because you get it at creation. However if they didn't list it I could imagine people arguing that it wasn't – GMNoob Feb 19 at 6:00

these class skill lists are redundant with the granted skills for several reasons.

  • Hybrid characters. Instead of creating separate class skills lists for hybrids, they just use the same skill lists and then you just don't get the automatic training.

  • Multiclass feats. Often these feats give you the opportunity train one skill off the class you're MCing into's feat list. It would be rather silly if you couldn't get thievery by MCing into a rogue, but you could by Mcing into another class that didn't get it automatically.

  • Certain feats specifically mention class skills. There is really only one of these that doesn't fall into the category above,(Academy Prodigy from Dragon 390), but it does merit a mention.

I did some quick checking on C. Ross's idea that the class skill list will stay consistent between character variants, but that the skills you get automatically would change. I've actually found something of the opposite to be true. It seems that the variants tend to get the automatic powers, but might have a different skill list.

To specifically answer your question, no you can't double train a stat. Trained is a specific condition for a stat with specific meaning, it doesn't make sense to have something trained twice. Some classes give specific choices to start out (the Ranger gets either dungeoneering or nature), both skills are class skills so that gives the opportunity for them to choose one or both (using one of their other training spots).

I see, I'll take that as 'No' on my question if it meant that you could select it as a Choice while also having it Initialy. Thank you very much for your help. – Lucifer Feb 17 at 17:13
@Lucifer missed the specific question there. You can't really train a skill twice. but if you get to choose one of 2 you can choose both. – wax eagle Feb 17 at 17:38
The first line of this answer is confusing. It took me a few tries to realize you meant that the class list contains redundant skills rather than saying that class lists as a concept are redundant. – GMNoob Feb 19 at 6:03
