Role-playing Games Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for gamemasters and players of tabletop, paper-and-pencil role-playing games. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I was asked what the benefits of role playing are and I was at a loss for an answer, I didn't have anything solid that was based off any facts. I know that there are benefits to roleplaying but at the time I couldn't come up with anything solid.

My question is this What are the overall benefits to RPGs and playing them?

This is... going to be closed as Not a Real Question, most likely. Not because it's an invalid query, but because StackExchange defines its scope very narrowly to specific, answerable questions. There's no way to really evaluate one answer as "correct" for this question. Instead, it is a fascinating discussion prompt, but SE isn't for discussion; you should use discussion forums for that. I'm sure people would love to talk about this in chat, though! – KRyan Mar 21 at 0:42

Anyway, that said, to comment for my own self: RPGs has, I think, dramatically improved my writing skills. Certainly improved my confidence and willingness to write. I play primarily online, you see, and have played a lot of play-by-post games (and put a fair amount of effort into each character's backstory). – KRyan Mar 21 at 0:44
Agreed. I'm not sure there's one provable answer. It is a very interesting discussion though. There's a similar question around here somewhere, I believe... Here rpg.stackexchange.com/q/2945/4089 – LitheOhm Mar 21 at 1:16

Yep. Closed. Mind you, if you scoped this to a domain that could be researched, it'd be fantastic. Ping me when you edit and I'll reopen. – Brian Ballsun-Stanton Mar 21 at 1:28

What are the benefits of knitting? Surfing? Numismatics? – SevenSidedDie Mar 21 at 2:29
