Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (a.k.a. "AD&D", "first edition", "1e") was written by Gary Gygax in three volumes between 1977 and 1979. It was the first edition of the game presented as the "official" rules of play. It was preceded by Basic Dungeons & Dragons and succeeded by Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition.
