One thing to note is that using a ranged weapon to attack a melee fighter provokes an attack of opportunity, which means that if you can close without getting shot, you may have the advantage. I'd say this is a case of "six of one, half-dozen of the other". You may own some chump with a pistol but get owned by a professional sniper. Pretty balanced... ...

I haven't played the Dresden RPG but I have read the books (several times each) and I think that many of the characters fit quite neatly into the standard D20 classes. Harry, for instance is a straight up Wizard, he starts at level 3 in Storm Front (he mostly uses Gust of Wind and Burning Hands) and 'levels up' after each book (kind of). The other magicians ...
