comment Techniques for making high level D&D play more manageable?
I have trouble coming up with specific advice, which is also generic enough to apply to all groups. I figured that explaining the principles and giving a few examples is more useful - allowing people to riff off these to address their own interests/groups

comment How do you port Dark Sun from AD&D to another system?
What about psionics, gladiators, half-giants? There's a lot of information that would need consideration, or porting. If it was me, I would think of the process as using Dark Sun as an inspiration, and writing my own setting from scratch using the new rules. This lowers the pressure (players won't expect anything as complete, especially if it is being written session to session), opens the opportunity to better fit with the new rules, and can significantly lower the upfront cost.

That might have been 2nd edition - it was definitely an option there.

comment Any advice for playing characters who are older (much older) than the player?
All skills interrelate. A phenomenal husband and father will likely have increased negotiation and other interpersonal skills, no?

I can see a dwarf, when asked about the last 50 years of his life, answering with the one word: "digging". Whenever the team is in a tunnel, or underground, he might provide very insightful extra information to the team. It seems like a stretch, though, to have someone spend that much time focused on just one single activity, which just so happens isn't relevant to most other daily activities. If he only spent 10% of his time dancing and singing, the local bard will have good competition.

For vampires, that can maybe make sense, but for elves? I always remember the children-with-hackysacks scene from Star-Trek Insurrection. If all you did was play with hackysacks for 10 years, you'd be rather amazing at it, I think (especially if you have multiple-centuries-old teachers to guide you)

comment Do underwater opponents have cover from someone in the water?
@Azeari - have you ever tried to throw a spear into water? If you're trying to emulate a realistic environment, you'll have the surface of the water slow down projectiles, change their trajectory, and cause underwater objects to appear displaced from their actual position.

comment Does color spray affect undead?
We had interesting border cases - the undead might see through the illusion, but they won't necessarily have the brains to know what to do about that. Also, higher level illusions, if discovered as unreal, would still be partially effective (ie, might still cause some damage)

comment Chuck Norris player character - can I keep true to the internet meme while still running a balanced game?
We'll give this a shot. Relying on roleplaying to create a character with CN's reputation sounds like something that will work without messing up the game system too much, and might be something that won't get boring too quickly, too

comment Is it practical to run a weekly lunch-hour game of D&D with my coworkers?
I think we're fairly comfortable taking a system and hacking it for speed. Also, if things take off, I can see ways to fit in small micro sessions in other work breaks - say, 15 minute sessions advancing side plots throughout the week between the hour long lunch breaks.

comment Is it practical to run a weekly lunch-hour game of D&D with my coworkers?
Is there a lighter version of the D&D rules? We're going with this system because most of us have some (passing) familiarity with it. Is there maybe an alternative game that is easy to pick up and would be appropriate for lunch breaks?

comment How to design a game for sociopathic characters?
The most critical component, I found, was finding adequate motivation for the characters to cooperate. It's much more difficult for a (mostly) evil group to find common ground for cooperation, and trust - it's difficult, but possible to maintain through character development, background and careful adventure design/choice.

comment How can I encourage my D&D Encounters group to do more role playing?
In my experience, these kinds of blunt questions can sometimes intimidate players, and push them away from having fun while roleplaying. I found it useful to sometimes ask leading kinds of questions - "You crit - was that an awesome hit or what?", as well as allow for leeway with some of the rules - the outcome may be fixed (the Orc leader dies), but the last move(s) may be changed to be more like fatalities (ie, the last cut decapitates him, the fireball incinerates the inside of his head, etc...)
