comment How do I read a 4-sided die?
This confused me too when I was first introduced to RPGs. As a rule of thumb, 1dX means the result of the roll (before modifiers) will be between 1 and X. There are no (typical) dice that require you to do anything mathy, just read the result.

comment Paragon tier wizards 'rocket jumping'?
@F.RandallFarmer Then wizards will just start pushing themselves diagonally upward and use acrobatics to land on their feet :)

Keep in mind that this can only be done with close blasts, not close bursts. Unless a power description notes otherwise, a close burst you create does not affect you.

Thanks for the answers everyone. I'm going to play it by ear (with a few backup plans) with these suggestions in mind. Our next session is tomorrow and I'll accept an answer after then, depending on what happens!

To those saying they should enlist the help of an NPC, I agree with you that its a good idea and the players have thought of that one. But our current setting is in a place where no man has ever tread, sealed off for eternity, only accessible to these epic characters with the direct help of a deity. So bringing in a civilian would be rather... impossible :) Even the deity herself cannot enter, or else she would reach down and smack some smarts into these guys!

To those questioning the design and intent of the trap/obstacle, I have to add a disclaimer: This was originally an extremely boring puzzle in a pre-written campaign. In the original the only wish that the well would accept is to create the key. It would have been a 2 minute forgettable bump in the road. I just tried to spice things up a little on short notice.

Great ideas here. There is a bad guy on the other side of the door. Maybe he'll get annoyed by all the noise and just open it for them! I also like the suggestion of a secret door leading to the same room. They haven't looked for one of those yet.

I definitely will do this, but they've spent so much time hemming and hawing that they haven't actually tried anything yet!

comment What happens when a creature falls on another creature?
Since its a houserule I'd certainly have no problem changing things up for exceptional circumstances. A stunned or unconcious creature would fail the acrobatics check automatically, but I'd leave it at half damage unless the fall was aimed intentionally. But on the other extreme, no you can't drop a sack full of pixies from a mile above Orcus to slay him from the falling damage outright. This is just a simple baseline to work from.
