@DougM that's pretty universal as a concept. I'd say the answer below this one from RS Conley indicates that meaningless rolls are very much not a part of 5e. See the bolded text of the quotes he cites.

You can also pre-roll for scenarios like this. Roll it during your session prep.

@BraddSzonye yeah, noted that in your answer, and included it here now too. Very good catch.

It's important to note that party member's spaces are considered difficult terrain though

comment The Warcaster Feat and Arcane Focus
@Snowpaw you may be able to hold your weapon in your shield hand. You can't use your shield hand to touch your focus since it's not "Free"

comment Order of Combat Operations (Warlock's Curse)
@Masaka re: teleportation. I'm arguing that the teleportations are two separate instances and thus are separate. The initial teleport puts you in the portal square, the second takes you through the portal. If they are handled as one, then you could force the save twice. If they are handled separately, then you can't. It's a grey area, but I'd handle them separately in my game.

@Masaka re: PHB citation, no, Pg 61 of the rules compendium though might help. We're splitting hairs here since we're parsing order of ops from something that is typically handled simultaneously. best we can do is try to find a bit of order.

What's the point of having them roll at all though if you're just going to give the success no matter the result?

comment Order of Combat Operations (Warlock's Curse)
@Masaka it's not actually that you can't force a save twice with the same ability, it's that the enemy would be standing on the portal square. So yes, the push is still very much in force, it's just you can't force the guy to save against the portal again since he's standing on it and that means you can't push him into it again.

comment Can Protection Fighting Style Be Used After The Roll?
All 3 of those have a much more significant cost than this (1 is a L1 spell, a valuable low level resource, the other two are feats, which aren't available at L1 unless you're a variant human). Defensive Duelist is the only one that doesn't consume additional resources, and it only adds proficiency (at low levels worse than disadvantage, at high levels better). Basically, as a L1 ability with no resource cost, yeah it could be a bit OP.

comment Grapple + Totemic Attunement (Eagle) = Zangief's Spinning Atomic Piledriver?
This...doesn't answer the question. I mean it sort of does, by proposing a better combo, but you need to address the question first. see: meta.rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/3318/…

comment Why do the starter set characters have unexpected attack bonuses?
@jdphenix absolutely. They wanted people to be able to sit down and play right away. Skipping character creation (or shortcutting it like the 4e redbox did), is a good way to get people spun up fast.

comment Why do the starter set characters have unexpected attack bonuses?
@Dieselboy yeah, they don't do a super great job of explaining why the characters are what they are in the box. It's much clearer with the PDFs which have the full rules.

comment Can high level Eldritch blast be used with War Caster?
@Jason_c_o no. In this case it was spotted early enough that there is no need to. The important thing is that the answer is now correct.

Good spot. I think I'm going to leave the quote as is in the question.

comment Ordinary people and magic in D&D5
It's not generic. It's Realms. Realms is the default setting for 5e. If you're asking about the default setting, make sure you note that.

comment Ordinary people and magic in D&D5
It would be helpful to at least address the default setting in an answer.

comment Ordinary people and magic in D&D5
This is heavily dependent on the setting. I'm not sure there is a general case answer. Consider the differences between say Faerun (Realms) where magic users aren't very common, but plenty exist openly, to say like Eberron where everything runs on Magic to Athas (Dark Sun) where magic is very costly and often hidden.

comment How to decide which of my intended classes to start as when multiclassing in D&D 5e?
This is probably too broad. There are a lot of considerations here and they probably all deserve their own treatment. Maybe focus on which class to start with (proficiency considerations), and then ask another about progression?
