Web Programmer. 4e player/DM. Have also run several games of Dread, and DMing an infrequent play test of DNDNext. Relatively new to table top gaming but I'm a fast learner.

@GMNoob I was looking for something that said that, where's that listed?

I was going to go with a daze, but hammers should daze, not spears.

Dragon 391 is the source of it.

@DCShannon I'll take a poke at the char builder and see if a better source is mentioned, the only source in the article is HOTFL :(. The fine details are that it deals Dex mod to all adjacent enemies except the target of Power Attack.

@DCShannon Slayers have a staff expertise. Damages all adjacent allies

Note that they also have a staff expertise.

comment Compatability of Dread and Delta Green
Interesting take on it, and as someone who loves Dread, I like the ideas you've presented here Re: story focus. If the story is focused on the evil side of the plot, the cast of characters can and should change regularly which caters well to the Dread style of play. That said, I definitely respect your issues with the system and understand how they would be magnified in an extended campaign

Hi and welcome to RPG.SE! This answer is heavy on the story, but not on the details of your suggested fixes. It would be really helpful if you outlined what your house rules on character creation are (at least in broad strokes).

comment What is the best way to retroactively fix a mistake? (2 shields)
@DiabloMonkey implements do not, no. But no, attacks with a weapon usually target AC, attacks with an implement usually target REF/FORT/WILL. AC is typically 2 higher than the other defenses. They come out in the wash (+3 weapons are slightly more accurate than implements, weapon attacks against not-AC are more accurate, implement attacks against AC are less accurate etc)

There are no somatic component spells in 4e (that's not a rules term in 4e even). Clerics can be fully implement based in 4e, a lot of Wis based clerics are. There are numerous shields enchanted as weapon in 4e so having a weapon would not be an issue. There is no penalty for improvised weapons in 4e (it's a lack of proficiency bonus which is max +3). The last point is sound.

@SevenSidedDie cool, conditional statement removed

4e is a complicated game to describe. The best description is that its a very refined tactical combat engine with borderline roleplay elements underneath it (not a bad thing, it just relies on more freeform for RP than mechanics). 5e looks to rely less on the tactical combat POV, but we're not sure what the RP elements look like yet. There are copies of the 5e playtest still available online still (drivethru rpg has a couple of adventures that include them), or you could try out 5e when it comes out next month (though not the complete game).

Hi and welcome! The product you've linked is the starter set for 5th edition, which comes out this summer. If you'd like to start with 4, the question I've linked as a duplicate will get you started there. If you'd like to start with 5th, please let us know and we can advise there.

comment Do monster close and area attacks affect allies by default?
I'm poking this one right now. MM1 usually specified enemies or not at all. Checking MM2 and 3 right now to see if they have additional advice.

comment Can a melee opportunity attack be taken with a ranged weapon?
Re: using a bow as an improvised weapon, if you're comparing it to a versatile weapon, I'd add a +1 to damage rather than making it a improvised two-hander. But that's neither here nor there as the likelihood of hitting with a bow is pretty abysmal (between the combined issue of lack of several bonuses (prof, feat, enhancement) and the fact that your stats are probably badly misaligned for melee)

please link to DDI when appropriate, it's silly not to (but also be ready to give the page number and book source if asked, it's good to do both in general but can be a PITA). Worth noting that unarmed attacks are always an option for opportunity attacks, but in general it's not a useful option.

I'm kind of curious what game effects exactly are at play here, would be cool if you enumerated this. Thanks

comment What are the implications of letting a player skip the Save Ends on effects?
@pet The number of beneficial effects a save can end are few and far between, and the one power I can immediately think of that has a saving throw for a beneficial effect (a cleric power that deals damage to the cleric but heals his buddies), explicitly allows skipping the save. In general, I support forcing a save every turn, but the number of combos that provide beneficial effects for hanging onto a save ends condition are few, and the amount of investment it takes to get them is usually pretty substantial.

@Wlerin sort of? There could be an argument made that forgetting to save is not actually a failure. It's a poor argument and breaks down quickly, but an argument could be made.
