Very interesting take, I totally didn't consider the monetary aspect!

comment Betrayed by my GM; how can I respond?
+1 I like this answer much better than @JonathanHobbs's one, since I don't really fully trust things went exactly as the OP said. While the point of Carter81 makes sense and I like him pointing that out, I still think this is too absurd to be true.

This post is very interesting, but... either this situation is completely absurd (allowing repeatedly in your house someone racist towards you? wtf? the whole party "just laughing" when this sort of thing happens? why did their characters actually enjoy such a thing?), or, more likely I think, there's more than meets the eye.

He is both DMing and playing a character recipe for boringness at best, disaster at worst.

comment I'm at a loss with “Dungeons and Dragons.” How does one play it, anyway?
When I first read the MERP manual, used to gamebooks like Lone Wolf, I also "just didn't get it", like in "yes but were is the list of actions I can do?". The play example came very handy, since one player dropped his sword, and the next turn his action was "I pick up my sword". At first I was at loss, since I couldn't find were it was explicitly written that as an action you could pick up a sword, after a while I got it.

I mentioned 3.5e and Pathfinder in the "Background" preface, and I encompassed 4e in the "tons of other games that are not relevant for this question" expression, since I feel it is too different from the other ones to be relevant about that ;)

@GMJoe problems arise if you also care about the story: there are few reasons for a 9th level group to accept a 1st level new character. Sure it can be done, but it requires proper planning, or you'll run out of valid excuses soon enough.

I agree with @ClaraOnager, I see no reason at all to play AD&D, since it basically has all the disvantages of 3rd edition, tenfold or more, without any advantage. (this is different from Original D&D™ that is so different not to be really comparable)

comment What is the limit of the DM's power over the PCs?
@TimothyAWiseman or, even better, people notices you have good items too powerful for you, and many will try to steal them until someone manages to (or until you level up enough). You'd have the choice to try to hide, to sell it, or whatever.

@AlexP where? Searching (for "hide" and "secret") I can't find it either.

comment How Can I Play A Fighter Dual-Wielding Shields In DnD 4e
If you want to be creative on a roleplay side, you can have your character pretend he's wielding two shields, despite one is an actual weapon. Could be much fun, if done well.
