What's the GHA?

While XP penalities aren't official, page 86 of the DMG does say levelling up is at DMs discretion (so could be denied) and explicitly gives fairly major penalties in terms of training time and cost.

Ah, I'd forgotten the no XP caveat (which makes complete sense, the character is acting out of type) which would be supported by stuff the DMG says too.

@MadHatter - sorry, didn't notice your question. I'm definitely in favour of the "heroes not super heroes" mantra. I hate the idea of overpowered characters but do think the average for a PC should probably be slightly higher than average for the wider population if that makes sense? So I'm in favour of 17, 16, 15, 12, 10, 8 type spreads of ability scores, against 18, 17, 16, 16, 13, 10.

I quite like the idea of improving ability scores though I'm not sure that at the frequencies you're suggesting it wouldn't overpower characters relatively quickly. Similarly HP - I can see that you want to avoid very weak characters but other than saying reroll ones (just once, roll a one again and live with it), I'd personally stick close(r) to the rules as written.

comment Do you get a save vs Falling Damage?
And I guess the 3 in 6 is a guide for a typical pit which the PM can adjust based on specific circumstances.

comment Is it possible to turn Tenser's Floating Disk into a chariot?
But how do you tether the "plate" to the chariot? I think the word disk is misleading, it seems the correct way to think about it more like an electro-magnetic field which creates a disk like area rather than as a physical object.

@RS - Sorry, was just being pedantic.

Re. sleep - sleep is both a noun and a very and does work (again, expressly stated in the PHB).

comment Good Single Word Instruction for “Command” Spell
@AceCalhoon - suicide is not a verb. It's not to suicide, it's to commit suicide. Commit is the verb, suicide is a noun. As it goes the PHB specifically mentions that suicide won't work for this reason.

comment How do you calculate THAC0?
@SevenSidedDie - Have been asked by the DM to do so to speed things up. Does the concept not work with 1e? Flicking through the DMG the principal of the die roll changing by one with each drop in AC of one seems to hold so the principal should work shouldn't it?

The PHB specifically says suicide won't work (it's a noun) but other good suggestions.

Die only causes them to collapse for a round. Undress is an interesting one though.

comment In early D&D, why would chainmail ever be preferred over plate armor?
Also if you're playing a town / village / wilderness scenario are you really going to lump around in full plate armour? Way to look inconspicuous.

comment Can AD&D Thieves Wear Studded Leather Armour?
@SevenSidedDie - I swear somewhere I saw that thieves could wear Elfin chain though (in the three core books).

comment Can AD&D Thieves Wear Studded Leather Armour?
@RS Conley - Elfin Chain in AD&D isn't magic (and indeed there is no magic Elfin chain - see DMG p. 28), it's just finer and stronger chainmail. But it's not just noise surely for something like disarming traps or climbing walls, it's bulk and padded is bulkier than leather (fairly vs. non) and slows you down more (both DMG p. 27).

But they can also wear padded armour which doesn't fit that description. And Elfin chain (listed in the DMG as acceptable I believe).

Unearthed Arcana introduces penalties too though limits it to Padded, Studded and Elfin Chain.

@MadHatter - Look at it another way. Piling into dungeons full of monsters is meant to be tough. Should it really be something that someone outside the top 10% can manage?
