I run a monthly? game of 4th Ed. Dungeons and Dragons with three players. I last played with 2nd edition, and I have limited experience with Paranoia, Top Secret: SI, Star Wars, and a few others I've forgotten.

comment Is large-scale battle feasible with D&D 4e's minion rules?
This is what I had planned to run battle encounters. (The story hasn't allowed me to try it yet). The battle will go on around the PCs unless they get close or try to help out, but the PC's objective will be tangential to the actual battle. The battle will function more like terrain effects than actual NPCs.

comment How to abstract a trial?
I think the jenga tower represents the weakness of the other guy's case, not the strength of your own. Every time A makes a good argument, B has to pull a block, weakening his own case.

comment How would I go about making an outdoor environment in dungeons and dragons?
Be careful trying to put actual walls in a forest. A forest naturally lends itself to wandering. Paths may suggest directions, but be ready for the characters to go off in the weeds if you give them a big wilderness map. Dense trees making a "wall" on one side and glass-smooth cliffs on the other side will make the players feel railroaded.

comment Players playing multiple characters
Definitely agree about having one main character to roleplay. I really like the idea of the backup characters being scaled back, maybe with just a couple of powers.

It would be interesting to see 2 characters as twins, played by 1 pc. Would you as DM require them be the same class?

comment How can a party with no healers return a character from the unconscious/dying condition?
I really like this. I was going to give my party an item quest, and this might get to be it.

That could be pretty funny, but I'm not sure my DM chops could handle the comedy.

@Chad, sorry, one of my players ran a guest spot and I sat in as a cleric. So we just happen to have an NPC cleric lying around. Also, it's a legitimate answer, although I probably wouldn't encourage my players to play multiple PCs.

comment How to write in-character introduction to new players for a new game background
this should probably involve a certain amount of collaboration with each player for character backgrounds. After all, most players are going to want to design their own characters, even if it's within the confines of your setting. But def. a good idea!

@Chad, definitely a possibility. Add it as an answer and I'll vote for you.

And I agree with your last statement, the main concern is that a player downed early in combat doesn't get stuck with no actions until the end. Maybe I'll let the idle player play some monsters against his friends...

@DForck42 My understanding of death saves is that if you succeed, you are stable but unconscious (at 0hp), and if you crit, you can spend a healing surge and come back. Of course, three fails and you die.

@Chad, I understand the sentiment. However, in a party of three one role will always go uncovered. They have a defender, a striker, and a controller. While you could argue that the leader is more important, its probably more important that each player gets to play a character they enjoy... I think as the level I will encourage them to multiclass one character to cover part of that role.

Haven't had a chance to go to my PHB but here is a citation from the wizards forum: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19658686/…
