I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

comment How much creative and descriptive power should I offer my players? Is it different for sandbox campaigns?
This is still very subjective. Since there are obviously games and groups like this and ones not like this, some people like it and others don't. That's unsurprising and not worth answers. Think about how to ask what you really want to know. Is it if YOU did that with YOUR players, who have specific inclinations and backgrounds and prefer certain games and disdain others? Probably, and that might be answerable with Good Subjective, Bad Subjective.

comment Are there negative impacts to having characters advance at different rates?
This also doesn't answer the question.

comment Are there negative impacts to having characters advance at different rates?
This does not answer the question posed. It's not talking about "attendance XP" or "roleplaying XP." It's asking about negative effects of letting non-present characters miss XP and progress at a different rate than their party.

comment Where does the idea of using the same character in multiple games come from?
Yes but not really relevant. Porting across genres to other tables has never been a thing. It's always w.g. "here's my old D&D character, I want to bring it into your D&D game." Porting across genres and stuff is done with some of these but that's a completely different kind of scenario.
