I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

comment Do NPCs understand target priority strategy?
This doesn't need a game and edition, but it does need to be a little more specific, it's a bit of an "invitation to discussion" and it's unclear what does the best answer to this look like.

comment How to deal with a player missing the first session of a campaign
+1 for making her explain how she's there. A dozen immediate answers come to mind- "with a previous party that all died," "captured by whatever's-around," "I live here," "My boyfriend is a charmed henchman of the evil guy..."

comment Which is a good system for one-player Dungeon Crawls?
Can you expand more on how you've played or seen played these games in the way the OP's looking for?

I'm going to close this for 24 hours while people read our guidance on system recommendation questions. If you don't provide an answer saying that you have, or you have seen, someone run a one player/full party combat heavy XP-based exploration dungeon crawl campaign with that system, you need to not answer. Best as I can tell, zero of the existing answers do this. We allow sys-rec questions on a limited basis because of these tight criteria; these questions are banned on most other SEs. Follow the rules.

comment How to deal effectively with a player unable to lose?
People are invested in sports teams about 1000% more than they are in RPGs. Do you actually know any sports fans? Physical violence due to bad sportsmanship is way more common than with RPGs. Just because the RPG experience is slightly different doesn't mean it's more invested or that it's not the same basic human drive at work.

I'm not totally clear that this question is on topic for RPG.SE. You have a friend with an anger problem but behave codependently with him. If you replace "RPG" with "poker" or "soccer" you have the same basic interpersonal issue.

comment Which is a good system for one-player Dungeon Crawls?
In other words, all answers to this question should be from people who have specifically run or seen run single-player dungeon crawl low-complexity games that fit the OP's criteria. "I'm sure X would work" is not a good answer.
