I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

comment Is OD&D faster than D&D 3e at low levels, and why?
Yeah, the battle-mat even being used at all is much more common in 3e+ than in 1e-. 3e at low levels is faster than 3e at high levels, but still slower than most other things.

comment How can I tailor an encounter so that a low level, mostly mundane party can defeat a wasp swarm?
+1. They do what anyone has to do when confronted by a swarm of wasps - run off and come back with smoke or poison or something.

comment Spoilt for choice: helping traditional-system players adapt to narrative-control games
As author of the accepted answer on that question, I would definitely recommend trying just "going for the gold" first instead of bastardizing the concept behind the system (it does run the risk of bringing mismatched habits forward), but if you have a hardcase that has trouble transitioning, then the longer migration route has merit.

Hey @Popo join me in chat. I want to get this question edited and reopened. You just have to unpack your requirements a little more - see my similar question rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/6212/…

comment How do you help your GM/fellow PCs track buffs/debuffs?
When you have multiple characters buffing/debuffing it gets noisy and difficult - also we have one player Skyping in and it turns mike noise to gibberish if people are talking over each other.

Thought about this, but for debuffing specific opponents seems like a difficult fit.

Yeah, I reckon we could do the Final Fantasy thing.

comment How can a GM quickly create interesting, engaging NPCs?
Bountied @AdamDray's answer in the end because of its more organized approach. It was tough, I like @Pseudoepehdrine's/@Judd's for the minimal jumpstart - name, appearance, goal, hook/relationship. I'll probably use those as the starter to seed the "NPC card" format. Other answers were too simplistic ("grab a trope," "grab a friend," "grab an actor" are not complete answers) or too long of an exercise unless you are doing heavy prep.

This is what we do now, I was hoping for something better and less chatty.
