I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

I'd like this answer a little better if it went into the situation beyond the usual "get the group on the same page" advice.

It's meant to be a little condescending to those who think that "easy mode" is the only way a RPG can be played. I'm pretty dismayed at the absolutist statements to that effect in some of the other answers.

Please clarify what game system you are using because it matters... If the answer is 4e then there's an existing Q&A that's a duplicate, rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/124/…

comment How do I effectively control a fresh animal companion in a way that doesn't slow down the party?
I think y'all are arguing past the difference between "the animal companion you start out with at level 1, that you have probably known for a while" vs. "a totally new one you just got yesterday." KRyan's points are valid for the former and invalid for the latter.

That other one actually was originally 4e and the answers have strong 4e flavor.

Closed as dupe. I can merge the answers over to that one if there's general assent.

I'm sorry, this does not answer the question posed.
