I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

comment Where does the stereotype that wizards can't wear armor come from?
This question is not scoped to RPGs as best as I can tell. Obviously it draws from the prior art of fantasy novels and all, as inherited by the first RPG, so the answer lies there I'd think. Ask on SF&F if you want, it would probably get a better answer.

comment Where do the standard racial tropes for Dwarves come from?
I already closed the other and migrated it to scifi. Please only ask questions here that are specific to the scope of RPGs.

Just because there's a couple indie games that handle it explicitly, the 95% bulk of all the trad games out there all handle it the same way. Those that work differently might provide interesting insight to an answer, not invalidate the possibility of one.

I think this works fine as system-agnostic, because this is PRIMARILY the expectations and play style of the group, not the rules themselves.
