I’m a thirtysomething dad and IT professional living in the Austin, TX area. I started gaming way back in the day, 1982, with the TSR space opera game Star Frontiers. Since then I've been an avid roleplayer. I went to 5 Gen Cons, was a regional Triad for the RPGA's Living Greyhawk campaign, helped start a gaming club (the FORGE) in Memphis, TN, et cetera.

I GM and play a variety of RPGs; currently Pathfinder is in heavy rotation as well as various non-D&D-based games.

comment How does wizard & cleric spell preparation and casting work?
To ask real questions and answer questions well, not "seed" questions that aren't good questions. "I want spellcasting explained to me without reading the rules" is a question in the sense of "it's something a confused dude would say" but not a question in the sense of a good RPG.SE question.

comment When teaching D&D 5e basic to players of previous editions, which terms have new meanings that will likely lead to confusion?
"I'm teaching the rules to people that haven't read the rules" - that's the underlying problem right there. Have them read the rules. Q&A is not a substitute for that.

comment How to handle a Strix in combat when flying?
+1 for understanding the fly rules; it's usually treated as infinite maneuverability and that's not correct.

This doesn't seem to be a real question beyond "I want to sum up some of the Basic rules." See this meta question to discuss questions of this type further: meta.rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/4754/…

A starknife is not a reach weapon. It's a light weapon, just a four-bladed dagger basically. (It can be thrown with a 20' range, maybe that's the source of the confusion?) Then you say spear, but even a longspear has a 10' reach, not 20'. The various facts in your question don't make any sense.

comment What can a Cleric actually summon with their Summon Monster spells?
Also, in most of the editions the list of summonable monsters is right in the spell description...

comment How do Permanent Ability boosts interact with other items/spells that increase that ability
The OP says "bonus becomes a permanent bonus as long as it is not removed", I don't think that's his question or a source of confusion to him.

Hey, this is not a discussion forum. Please only use comments to get clarification on or improve the answer. I think the general point about "metagaming maybe shouldn't be assumed" has been made.

This doesn't answer the question posed.

comment What are the major differences between the final playtest package and D&D 5e Basic?
You realize you can just read the free Basic PDF and find out. Questions for the sake of questions isn't really that super.

What is your source to prove that other sources of damage (e.g. falling) should count as attacks?
