Must compels be negative in FATE? though I didn't go with this answer, thanks for the food for thought. I think a lot of it depends on the person running the game, and the flavour of FATE, so this way of looking at it could be perfectly suitable in certain implementations. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? @SevenSidedDie - +1 for the feeding FATE point economy. It's one of the reasons I wanted to do it as a compel, as it seems that it's very easy to get into a zero-sum game with FATE points, at least in Dresden. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? That was part of what I was asking- do Compels have to be negative? So I guess that you're saying yes, compels have to be negative? |

Must compels be negative in FATE? No, that doesn't say what you said it says. "...accept the complications and limitations on your character's choices and receive a fate point..." depends on the nature of the compel. I'm compelling them to remember, not to do anything. And I guess that's the crux of the difference that I'm seeing- some people compel to fail. I don't compel to fail, I compel to complicate, e.g. the difference in PC terms of invoke or invoke for effect. This is a complication in terms of more information, so it seems to apply. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? Where is the part about reject your idea and continue what they were doing? As I said, it doesn't make them do anything with the information, hence the From there, it's up to the player what to do with the new information in my statement above. I suppose the point is I don't have to give them a fate point; I could just say it. But there's no real reason to reject it. It seems to be playing with the rules in a different way, but that's why I posted it here. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? I just see it as two different ways to get the same effect; I don't see the advantage of one over the other, which is I guess what I was asking in my original question. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? I see how that is mechanically different, but how is it different in practice or intent? |

Must compels be negative in FATE? Not changing how the PC was playing the character, but just give a bit of information based on the aspect so that they might reconsider their actions. Whether they reconsidered or not was up to them, but with that bit of information, i.e. Because of your prior assessment you recall that the hedge wizard seems to dislike the frontal approach vis-a-vis his aspect of Wannabe Subtle Wizard, so this seems unlike your thoughts on his character. From there, it's up to the player what to do with the new information. |

Must compels be negative in FATE? Having a cop there is something I could do without resorting to a mechanism. But my point in doing it (rather than forcing him to go further as suggested above) was to put the ability to steer the story and the character's potential need for action. If they didn't want the side story, then pay it off. If they did, then the cop is there and deal with it. |

Margin of Success on skill checks in The Dresden Files +1 thanks. I needed that last line, i.e. the only remaining source for your own hesitance to reveal mechanical information will be from habits that are appropriate to non-Fate games, and that's exactly the time to override that habit. I seem to figure this stuff out after the fact, but the players are pretty good about it, thankfully. |
