AD&D scrolls and learning spells The Write spell mentions it's for transcribing spells the player doesn't know into their spellbook. Since the player is copying the spell from a scroll to their spellbook, it's not likely that the player already "knows" the spell (i.e., that they can already memorize & cast it).
