Great leaders know how to delegate, that's why they don't always do everything themselves. Truly great leaders should set you off in a journey which lies just slightly beyond your current ability, so that you can develop further but have a reasonable chance of success. A bad leader though, would delegate someone who has no chance of successfully completing their mission. Like those poor punchbags that enemy bosses likes to send to PCs for free experience points.

Speaking of chess, Elo System is some kind of "experience point" system as well, except for actual human players instead of game avatars; and it has been around since at least 1960 according to Wikipedia (and there are even older rating systems).

@Jared: I suspect maybe you had difficulty distinguishing which one refers to "a flat recognition of achievement" and which one refers to "a currency of achievement" because in the end it turns out that "a flat recognition of achievement" == "a currency of achievement".
