I'm a windows C# developer and Linux admin. For some reason that isn't a conflict.

comment How much would it cost to hire mercenaries for a couple days?
I love this idea but as so often happens my game is coming up too soon for me to do the amount of planning I think this would take to do it "right" for my next session. I may have to hold on to this for a future excursion.

I think for now I'm going to go with that as a perdiem rate (hazard pay after all :) I may modify that for future adventures. For now I am trying to discourage them slightly. Also if they really want to go down this road I'll give them the chance to RP some and haggle the price down.

I like that answer. I'm going to make that a per diem. I have enough time that if they decide to do this for real I could make a real character out of the NPC which could be fun.

comment How do I kidnap my characters without bending the rules?
@JonathanHobbs I see that now. I was just nervous because the players are relatively new to this and this is my first campaign as a DM and I didn't want them to have a bad experience. The session happened about 2 weeks ago or so and went really well so I consider this question a success.

For the curious. After reading the answers presented to this point I think I'm going to go with the easy way out and just have the wake up already kidnapped. The drama of the scene I'm trying to put together really relies not on the method of the kidnapping by the motivations behind it. (The kidnapper isn't really that powerful he just has very damaging info on the party.) There's some really good ideas here for where to go with future plot hooks once I'm through this intro to a new arc. Also it will induce a certain paranoia about securing their house, which should also be entertaining.
