comment What do you do when a player intimidates your campaign boss to surrender?
First of all, he couldn't know this by memorizing the MMs, since the monster in question was custom made. Second, he had prepared for this situation beforehand, and when I tried to go "I don't think you can do that" his asking me if the boss was immune was a way of calling bullshit on me. I know I could've just lied to the player and said yes and that would've been that, but it would have been immensely unfair to the player.

@KRyan But won't that obviate the point of skill checks altogether once the group reaches a certain level? If the group faces an arcane lock, the wizard automatically disables it. If the group needs to identify a poison, the shaman automatically does so. If the groups needs to move a heavy boulder, the fighter automatically does so. It seems to me that if there's no chance of failure, the skill-part of the game ceases to be a challenge?

So a player trained in a skill should never have to roll for it?

I would never have anyone roll to see if they could jump over the moon. If it's impossible, it's impossible. And the other way around, if it's so easy that there is no chance of failure, I don't make the players roll for it. So I feel comfortable having auto success and auto failure on skill checks.

How about hallucinations? Especially if he gets tortured for information and deprived of sleep/food/water. Since it's just him and his mind in there, maybe his subconsciousness tries to tell him important plot points.
