Neither Harry Dresden or his apprentice (to avoid spoilers) lack free will and a chance at redemption. Yet, under the rules, they now both should be NPCs. Maybe the rule does not make sense? This is why there is a section that encourages players to keep playing their characters. Just made sure they have that urge to take the easy way: keep on using their dark side.
