Nescire autem quid ante quam natus sis acciderit, id est semper esse puerum. Quid enim est aetas hominis, nisi ea memoria rerum veterum cum superiorum aetate contexitur? -- Cicero, Marcus Tullius (106-43BC)

GM intrusion in Numenera do something similar. It should be easy to port to any system.

The ram failed to break the gates until that point. Sure, we can not know for sure what Tolkien intended by those words. I am unaware of any of his writing that specifically defined his magic. Certainly Gandalf, Galadriel, Aragorn, and quiet a few other of the case use supernatural abilities. Whether you define those as "spells" or not is really up to you.

You never see (read about) anyone doing classic spell-casting... Not quiet true. The Witch King of Angmar casts at least one spell at the Gate of Minas Tirith. His title even suggests that he was a magic user in the past. Quote from Tolkien: "Then the Black Captain rose in his stirrups and cried aloud in a dreadful voice, speaking in some forgotten tongue words of power and terror to rend both heart and stone." -- Return Of The King, the Siege of Gondor.

+1. I particularly like you last point of supernatural abilities instead of spells. It pretty much echoes my own views.

YAGNI seems to apply here as well...

The Paris catacombs were never designed as a necropolis. They were stones mines that were re-purposed as dumping ground for overflowing graveyards.

comment How can I Help a New GM Get Started?
I, for one, think this is a good answer because it does answer the How can I Help a New GM Get Started? which is the main topic in my not so humble opinion. It addresses why a different system would be better which is a valid criticism of Channgling. Although, a little more why Channgling is a bad idea could potentially improve the answer.

While I voted to put on hold, please do edit and refocus the question and maybe split it into several because there's a lot of potential there!!!

Are you interested in a system specific answer (thus the tag) or would you open to a system agnostic answer? The fact that you used the tag seems to point to the former but that means I would not be able to answer it... :(

I am going against the flow here and think that the question could be answered adequately. My answer is very generic but I could see a better answer by a scholar of ASoIaF.
