I live in Lymington, Hampshire, and work in the Law Courts, which may have made my English slightly pedantic. I realize that Americans and other ex-colonials labour under a disadvantage, and regard it as an holy duty to assist them in speaking (and thinking) clearly.

Problems Regarding a Mary-Sue type Player Character Not every character (in RPGs or RL) actually has a dark secret they wish to keep from the world at all costs. This may make it harder for the GM; but such is life. |

Is Coup de Grace on sleeping and bound opponents an evil act? -1 for 'why have the books put those rules in place?'; having rules for inflicting fire damage doesn't allow you to burn people alive. But +1 for the last paragraph; like most alignment arguments, this seems to have started because different players had different ideas of what is unacceptable. |

Is Coup de Grace on sleeping and bound opponents an evil act? Since you ask; the vital difference between shooting an armed burglar in your house and following him into the street after he drops his weapon and shooting him in the back. I take your point (which is presumably why the GM made his ruling), but this is still killing helpless enemies without giving them a chance to surrender. The act may not be Evil, depending on the situation, but doing it "gleefully" without justification almost certainly is. |

Is Coup de Grace on sleeping and bound opponents an evil act? Can't disagree with your first sentence, but the question is explicitly about the difference between 'Kill all those who don't surrender' and 'Cut their throats while they're asleep'. |

Is Coup de Grace on sleeping and bound opponents an evil act? Where does 'every intent to kill you' come from? Historical pirates had every incentive not to kill those who surrendered. Granted, there may be a reason why these particular pirates should not be spared; but the mindset 'anyone who opposes me should be killed in any way possible' is closer to Evil than Neutral. |

How can I deal with players who are reluctant to spend resources? @p.marino: There's no reason why any resource could not become progressively less valuable. I can see practical difficulties, but it's an interesting idea. |

Do military ranks transfer between regiments? Influence by itself will never get you promotion, though it can be used to persuade NPCs to resign and allow you to buy your way up. The whole point of this process is that it is not instantaneous. |

Can commissions be purchased while on Campaign by using a servant or intermediary in Paris? FWIW, I have just done exactly this in Les Petites Betes Soyeuses (pevans.co.uk/LPBS), a postal campaign that has been running for 20 years. |

How do I get my PCs to not be a bunch of murderous cretins? @mxyzplk: This is not the place for an ethical debate about large-scale killing. My point is simply that killing wolves is not race murder, however objectionable you find it. You cannot simply assume that [non-human monsters] are human enough for this purpose, without explaining this to the players. Otherwise you're not running a game, you're punishing people for not sharing your assumptions. |

When exactly do “once each round” effects work? Does that mean you can start the turn grappling one opponent, deal damage at start, release him and grapple another, and then damage him as well? |

How to build a Secret Base without killing the builders 'Main entrance is via magic' sounds too high-level for this situation. Also, it makes it too easy (build the complex under a hill a hundred miles away, arrange magical access, light, and air, then blow up all connections with the surface). |

How do I get my PCs to not be a bunch of murderous cretins? @mxyzplk: Killing Orcs is not murder; it may be destroying vicious predators who threaten the existence of humanity (as in LOTR) or attacking intelligent neighbours who have a different shape and colour. If the GM doesn't make the situation clear, the players will make their own assumptions. |
