Fast-paced and brutal rpg system I don't think I've ever seen Fight! go beyond 2-3 exchanges (an exchange is a set of the 3 scripted volleys). Usually by that point it's all but decided and can be called either way, either with one side running or getting overrun/incapacitated. |

As a GM, what minimal geographic knowledge should I have to make realistic maps? You may want to look at the procedurally generated worlds created by the game Dwarf Fortress for inspiration. |

How do you handle verbal exchanges between NPCs without taking the PCs out of the spotlight? I've used this with major NPCs to a fine success - you just have to trust your players. Probably not the best technique in a munchkin "kill-em-all-and-take-the-loot" style game, but where the players care about the story, it's great. |

Guidelines for what items should be available from merchants? Should this question be tagged with something for d&d? The top answer mentions "rules as written", which isn't really useful for a system-generic question. |

Low-random, low-dice fantasy rpg system This is one of the best sys-rec questions I've seen on this site. If only all of them were this good. |

How do I politely decline to hear a gaming story? Is this question really a fit for this site? It seems like it applied to any hobby at all and any social situation (How do I let a person know that I'm not interested in the story they are telling) |

Is there the equivalent of a “Skill Check” in Dungeon World? This answer applies pretty cleanly to Apocalypse World too. |

GMing an unorthodox setting the players know NOTHING about If your players are the sort to read this, try making a different version with different/missing info for each player to represent what that one character specifically has heard or knows. That way the characters can explain things to each other if it comes up and get a closer bond. |

Combat system that is less abstract than hit points yet is not more lethal Check out the "wound threshold" concept from Earthdawn. In brief, you have HP, but if you take hp damage above your wound threshold in one hit, you get a wound as well, with mechanical/narrative penalties. |

What software can I use to simulate a deck of cards for playing online? Just ended up using this last night. Was a little buggy but it got the job done and everyone had a great time with it. |

Alternatives to D&D and Pathfinder @BrianBallsun-Stanton: I took "tactical" to mean "with a tactical map", but I can see how it would be interpeted otherwise. Regardless, it's not a required rule -- you can run an entire campaign without using the rule. You can run a campaign without even needing it, if the plot is centered around social conflict. Alex P: I disagree that LP restrict as much as classes. LPs restrict where you came from, but classes restrict where you're going. I think that's a big difference. In any case, thanks to both of you for your feedback |
