In terms of not-being-injured when hit, I'm sure that armour is much worse! Here's the acid test: if you were wielding a sword and were given the choice of a good shield or some armour, which would you rather have? How much armour would you need to have before you were willing to give up that shield? I'd want a full coat of chain at least, I think.

Just some background: I am more familiar with wargaming rules than RPGs. In many of those shields are essential to survival, especially vs archery. Although some of the less rigorous sets do seem to propagate D&D's bias against them!

Thanks for the historical overview; it certainly matches what I remember from earlier versions. Never could understand why a shield is worth only a one point increase, as I would have thought that shield alone is worth about as much protection as chain, reducing in benefit as armour is added.

Yeah, that's not bad. A lot of extra record keeping, but nice to see materials coming to the fore.

That's a nice contrary view, and it does look like you could make something useful out of existing rules. But you are right, I would like them to be more viable in general, and focussing on boosting them against attacks that matter is particularly insightful. And interesting to note that 4e applies the shield bonus to Reflex saves, too.

Fantastic summary, thanks; the sample fighter is particularly illuminating!

Also, I have to say I'm not unhappy with two-handed weapons being powerful; at least they were frequent historically, and melee classes should be able to dish out a lot of damage if that is their focus. In contrast, two-weapon fighting should be rare and difficult to master. I'm not a big fan of the way it has come to be expected as a standard combat style in a lot of systems as historically it was almost non-existent.

Ah, shield bonus as DR is nice and clean. Though you would have to define exceptions: does a magical shield's enhancement bonus add DR, too? Does the Shield spell? Any other sources of shield AC?

Heh, funny typo: 'horde' should have been 'hoard'. But the way some campaigns play...
