+1 for "First, consider that the other party might be right."

comment What and where was the Cloak Tower?
From memory, Volo's Guide to the North is available in .pdf form from some online RPG stores. Perhaps someone who's read it could say if it's worth looking up?

I came here hoping that "the Dance of Spider Mountain" was a thing. I imagine it would involve much swiping at air and batting at clothing.

comment What techniques can help players reach consensus quickly on group actions?
@KorvinStarmast If the OP's players are so immature that this solution doesn't work, I doubt RPG.SE will be able to help; The only cure for immaturity is time. That said, I get the impression that the OP's players are reasonably mature, but aren't yet used to this particular problem, and so are having trouble solving it themselves.

comment How to begin a role-playing scenario in medias res?
+1 for providing only the information that is needed, as part of the scene. By avoiding a large expository info-dump and getting straight into the action, this is exactly what the OP wants, albeit in a form the OP didn't predict.

@Miniman That's a reasonable objection. I have read this advice in a number of sources, but Ryuutama was the only one I could remember by name when I wrote this answer; I'll add other sources as soon as I can find them again.

comment Is the DM Always Right?
@Dyndrilliac I think I may have been unclear: I fully agree that a GM should be able and willing to provide a list of their existing house rules when asked. I just want to add the caveat that the GM may later decide to add a new house rule to the game (and thus to the list); Having a list in advance helps, but it isn't a perfect guarantee that the game will be played completely in accordance with the rules-as-written-at-the-start-of-the-campaign.

@doppelgreener The bit about expecting a list of houserules to grow with time; That's the important bit, and the bit I'd recommend be edited into the answer. The primary purpose of many houserules is to account for things the existing rules don't, after all.

Asking for a list of extant house rules is reasonable. That said, it's impossible to predict every situation that could come up during play in advance, so it's not uncommon for new house rules to be invented as the need arises. Expect a few new entries to be added to the list as the campaign goes on.

comment Low-Light, Darkvision and nightfall
Like Afroakuma says, I'm pretty sure low-light vision is described in the PHB as granting vision in moonlight or starlight as good as it would be in full daylight (though it looks like this information isn't in the SRD).

comment Wish on a scroll: Who suffers the consequences?
Historical note: In 3.5rd and earlier editions, the "costs" of a powerful wish cast from a magic item were usually borne by the item's creator when they made it.

@Tanthos I'm not familiar enough with the Forgotten Realms setting to know what Lathlander stands for - but in any case, if you have a follow-up question, you should post it as a new question instead of asking in a comment.

@JimB Indeed; That's why I didn't call them out here. The Planescape setting even explicitly state that Petitioners tend to fill the role of NPC commoners in most campaigns: The commoners of most powers are so bent on their spiritual development that they have no interest in adventuring.
