comment Increasing reach of unarmed strikes
One possibility is to use Spring Attack and run in and hit stuff, then run back. Not increasing reach, but allowing you to get in and back again in the same turn. Monks get Spring Attack as a bonus feat at level 6, I think (may need prerequisites...).

I may not have made this clear, but I was assuming that another character would be casting Entangle.

Good point on pre-requisites. Although in this case a single tree is still 'within' the area. The fact that the spell definition also mentions that other ground in the AoE is classed as difficult terrain reinforces the fact that the whole 40' radius area does not have to be covered in vegetation. I'll check out those other spells, good suggestion.

+1 for the point about Transmute vs Illusion. Although not backed-up by rules in your answer, I believe there is a certain logical/implicit difference between the schools of magic.

Okay, but if we accept the area of effect would be significantly reduced, you're saying that it could be used in combo, if the Druid was (for example) within normal melee range of the intended target at the time?

comment Betrayed by my GM; how can I respond?
Giving this "Bob" character the benefit of the doubt, it's possible there are some misunderstandings from the OP, and perhaps the DM and other players are not aware how the OP took their actions. Always best to talk things through.

comment How can I deal with players who are reluctant to spend resources?
I do this all the time, both with tabletop and computer-based RPGs. I find the only thing that makes me spend "consumables" (be they meta or physical items) is necessity, or the knowledge that they're easy to come by (or cheap). Increase the difficulty of the game, or make the resources more readily available.
