I just noticed that the one profile copies to each site. I will have to start adding reference to each of the StackExchange sites to seem a bit more multidimensional.

superuser: I got an Apple IIe at about 10 years of age. I became a computer gamer. Then you needed to know how to wiggle, jiggle, manipulate, and navigate all around a computer (at least software side) to get it to do what you wanted. I was motivated to learn and worked long and hard at it. Now, like many of you I am sure, I am the the go-to guy when it comes to fixing, tweaking, or simply using the potential of friends and neighbors computers.

Role-Playing Games: GMed on and off over the years. Mostly off for the past 10 years or so. Starting things back up. Have started to formalize my last campaign in a wiki and am resurrecting it as I type! Thus I am here to seek the insight and experiences of others.

wiki.enclaverpg.org is my campaign site forum.enclaverpg.org is my attempt at moving some of the play and day to day routines onto the web

comment Can a Magic User cast 'Illusion Disguise' on someone even though they don't agree with it
Would the target necessarily be aware of the spell cast in your world? That would be an important data point as to whether the target 'should' be able to resist.

comment What does “Pinned and Helpless” mean when an opponent has been successfully pinned?
Coming at this about a year later and rereading all I realize 2 things. First, I have not played in way too long. Second, I need to evaluate the harm that may befall a character that undertakes this strategy and just how often that harm is likely to occur. GURPS is generally a more fatal and less-forgiving system. I'll let it play out over the next several sessions if I can get my players back together.

comment How do you encourage players to leave classes behind?
We are moving from a 3rd edition D&D background. The campaign is well off the ground. I have found much more freedom as the GM in this campaign than in the last. This has little to do with the gaming system directly and more to do with what I learned in moving to a more ad hoc rule-set. GURPS has honed my skills by forcing me to adopt a new perspective and spend more time on learning what I want and how to build the foundations I need to support myself and those playing with me. Now I just need to find out how to make more gaming time available!

How is it "too good actually"?

comment When do you need to call a Disruptive Strike?
It would seem that in conjunction with the quotations above, the DM should be persuaded to at least separate his/her attack and damage rolls. As he/she is behind a screen, perhaps he/she rolls normally, announces the hit, allows time for reaction, and then reads the damage if no action is taken.

I concede the point of paralysis and have been giving the best leg up I can with some minor templates. Was hoping for a methodology of more a clean break. All the opinions and experiences are what I come here for though. Thank you!

The GCS on hand is how I did one character. It worked well as the player was not dead set on a specific class and just described characteristics to go with. Using lower point (100) characters also made it easy to start, but leave room to customize.

comment When should hit locations be determined randomly in GURPS 4e?
I do like the d6 idea at the end of your answer. It gives a little flavor, but does not lead to chaos.

comment As a GM, what minimal geographic knowledge should I have to make realistic maps?
There is a community at Profantasy that may be of help due to their mapping software products (Campaign Cartographer series). forum.profantasy.com/… is a link to a critique of a map that pays attention to scale and the patterns of rivers.

comment How to remember all the rules?
A variation of the third tier is to have one of the other players not immediately involved do the search as the game play continues. I have 4 players at the table. We can go with the First Tier mentioned above as it is researched and double checked to see if we were off base and to what extent. Then we correct in the future. This keeps the flow going well for the most part and enables the whole table to learn. It is my experience, that an event we had to look up during game play more readily comes to mind the next go.

Thank you. Looks like I need to clean up some defenses then. I'll hit the SJ Forum and do some more research on past discussions.

I appreciate the pointing out of the boxed text. This is more or less what I was thinking it could mean, but it makes for a pretty easily gamed system. I've a character in my group with a 14 ST. She was awoken so used her wrestling skill to grapple the opponent and in short order pinned him. As we the other characters were hindered by this all occurring in the dark, thus missing most of the time with weapons, it was asked how hard finishing off the opponent was. It seemed an easy way to dispatch foes if one were to risk the initial threat of damage to get close. Could readily be munchkinned.

Second book of the Basic Set. Starts its page numbers to follow the Characters book. Characters and Campaigns are each volumes of the Basic Set. Perhaps at times they are published as a single volume as they share page numbers and indices.

comment Fighting boredom in combat as a player
I play with my kids and they describe their attack in fair detail not paying attention to mechanics at all. (I am sure they will Munchkin someday, but currently are RP purists.) I apply the appropriate mechanic, let them roll the dice, and describe the results in line with their described assault. It has opened up my view of combat considerably doing things this way.

comment Are there any good tabletop RPGs for young beginning players?
While not a system recommendation, GM techniques are discussed here: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/12094/… . There are some system recommendations, but the argument is put forth the the GM style is likely more important that the actual game system employed.

comment Introducing new players to GURPS
I have found the the GCS can be tweaked to produce character sheets that work well in a wiki (at least MediaWiki). See wiki.enclaverpg.org/index.php?title=Ayrk_Cooperson/… for an example.

comment Campaign is on hiatus. How do I keep it on life support?
The wiki was going to be my suggestion when I came across it here. I second the option. I am currently reviving a campaign and the wiki is helping. We keep flushing out the world as a team as we have time to contribute. It keeps the characters, setting, and general conversation alive and kicking the whole time. We have not played in months, but we get wiki updates at least every week and frequently in bursts as we all play off each other's input.
