I'm a game designer that's been playing tabletop games since the early '00s. Most of my experience is with the D&D 3/3.5/Pathfinder ruleset, but I've bee branching out more in the past few years.

-1: This question is tagged dnd-3.5e, and this answer only related to Pathfinder.

Fixed some formatting, removed the note on metamagic since that wasn't really important to the question.

@ColinD That's pretty much exactly the kind of clarification I've been hunting for the past hour. Thanks!

@SevenSidedDie The D&D 3.5 one is certainly useful, and is typically a good source for how to run things in a sane game, but it's written by one guy, who is not considered a primary source. Where the D&D 3.5 official FAQ conflicts with rules text, RAW says that the rules take precedent, because the FAQ is not an errata, and is not a primary source. I just don't know if that's the same thing with Pathfinder.

Is the Pathfinder FAQ considered RAW by Paizo? I know that the D&D 3.5 FAQ is not, and I don't know enough about how Paizo operates to know if that is RAW or not.

Adding Pathfinder tag and a note about Pathfinder to the question.

The reason why I am not satisfied with that quote is that the character is not casting higher level spells; they are casting lower level spells in higher level slots. Magic Missile is a 1st level spell whether you cast it from a 9th level slot or a 1st. Clearly a 1st level wizard with high intelligence can cast 1st level spells, and that qutoe does not say anything about what spell slots a wizard has access to, only what spells they may cast.

@KRyan: Fire resistance is more common than cold resistance, true, but the difference isn't very big: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/13608/…

How are you getting the War domain? The sources that I'm finding say that Auril has the Storm and Winter domains, not War. How you get access to that domain may be important.
