I'm a game designer that's been playing tabletop games since the early '00s. Most of my experience is with the D&D 3/3.5/Pathfinder ruleset, but I've been branching out more in the past few years.

In most cases, the "the spell ends" clause is redundant. The detect spells require concentration, and you can't concentrate while stunned, since you can't take actions while stunned. In the past, I've seen DMs rule that a permanent detect evil doesn't end when you get overwhelmed, it just breaks your concentration and you don't get any more rounds of info while looking at that source.

comment Conditions of readied actions
The specific wording of the readied action isn't important for the purposes of this question. "When X takes any action" might be a better wording, but the question isn't about the specific wording.

I think that the existing answers cover the ground pretty well. I was just trying to make a joke about the Jacobellis v. Ohio Supreme Court case: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_know_it_when_I_see_it

@aramis No matter where the line is, it's pretty clear that the line is fuzzy. The best 'definition' that we're likely to find is still going to have some edge cases that give unexpected results. The games that you describe are the immediate predecessors to modern RPGs, so it makes sense that they straddle that line a bit.

Hello, and welcome to RPG.SE! It looks like your answer is more a forum-style response than a standalone answer. Your answer doesn't really say anything that the current accepted answer doesn't, and it's likely that you're going to attract some downvotes because of that. I'd suggest taking a look at the tour and help center, and maybe adding something to this answer that gives more detail into what you think makes your answer different from the other answers.
