Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1st edition and started GMing with AD&D 2nd edition. Ran D&D 3rd edition, D&D 4th edition briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they fit nicely into a busy schedule, and are very good for enticing non-gamers into the roleplaying hobby.

comment RPG designed for irregular players/gaming?
Games that don't have mechanical advancement are also well suited to this sort of arrangement. One such is FATE.

In any case, [metagaming] is definitely the wrong tag.

comment Who holds the license for Cadillacs & Dinosaurs?
Current license ownership is generally thorny, muddy, and not public unless the subject of a recent hyperbolic media release. Your best bet is to contact someone central to the original game's licensing negotiations and asking them, such as Mr Mark Schultz. (My best guess is the game license likely reverted to the owner of the Xenozoic copyright after a number of years, whoever that is, likely Mr Schultz still.)

comment How to make magic items more interesting?
@Brian That's only true for games that are battle-focused and rules-complex enough to induce mental simplification strategies like battle schemata. An item that is a strategic (non-combat) puzzle all its own can provide lots of interest when the players' heads aren't already full of grid-based tactical complexity.

comment Can Paladins be evil?
@mirv120 No, D&D alignment doesn't work like that. Groups of chaotic individuals act as mobs or hordes—they don't create orders that exist only by virtue of group acknowledgement of the rules and structure (i.e., "laws") of the order. However, you don't need to imagine some way of making CE individuals act lawful enough to create an order: there's no reason you can't just have a Chaotic Evil "paladin" who acts as a lone agent of destruction and chaos. They might be directly inspired/created/twisted by a CE god rather than being in a hierarchy like LG paladins.

comment What are the most popular/well known larp systems that meet our requirements?
@DForck42 Well it's not a system so much as a stakes resolution mechanic that can be used bare or hacked into a larger system, but here it is: Otherkin Dice (uses plain d6s, despite the possible reading of the name to imply otherwise). What's good about it is that it only comes in when you try something that everyone else won't just grant you, and it makes you think about what exactly you're going for, what you're risking for it, and what your priorities are.

A nice software interface, and cross-platform too. I'm going to have to play with this…

comment What is the weirdest RPG ever created?
This would be a great question to kick off a discussion thread at RPGnet or your favourite roleplaying forum. StackExchange's format just isn't suited to discussions.

I've done this. Add a key to the corner of the card that indexes into my GM notes, and I can easily reference the item without looking at the character's sheet/index card. If I ever forget where that potion bottle came from and what's in it, the cryptic number in the corner of the card tells me!

comment How would I go about making an outdoor environment in dungeons and dragons?
I think I'm confused reading that. It sounds like you're calling 3e/3.5e "AD&D". AD&D definitely doesn't have an emphasis on minis tactical rules.

This is why I love Apocalypse World and Dungeon World. Zero-prep games are so awesome as an adult GM.
