Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Have been playing and GMing D&Ds from B/X to D&D 5e. Becoming a fan of indie games and the OSR in the mid 2000s expanded my horizons for both trad and indie games. Fond of GMless and short-form games that suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

comment How does a PC fight multiple creatures at the same time?
@SayMercy Default, a PC or any creature gets a single standard action that they can choose to use to make one attack with. Various things allow multiple attacks (wielding a weapon in each hand (like in my example), being high-level, being a monk, being a monster with multiattack, …), but they're exceptions that are spelled out clearly where they apply.

comment How to keep the group engaged when the party is split?
This jibes well with my experience with split groups (which has happened a lot in our current Apocalypse World game), +1.

comment How much damage can a druid Wild Shaped into a spider take without dying instantly?
Nicely and informatively covers both readings without privileging one or the other before getting to table rulings. I don't think I have anything to add! I'll wait a while to accept to give the chance that someone gets the Word of Crawford on it, but this is good.

@Miniman The damage scale really breaks down, down here with the small critters, doesn't it. But now I'm imagining a much bigger, bitier lizard, which is fun.

This may be a duplicate: Tasks for a split party. I can't tell if the different details make them sufficiently different or not. Does it solve your problem?

Hah, well done. I didn't even think to check that. My 3.x mental habits are showing.

There are several definitions of "animal." Using the scientific meaning of "animal" for understanding the Beast type would make it include every creature in the book that wasn't a construct, undead, or plant — including humans. Obviously then, 5e isn't using the scientific meaning of "animal" to define beasts. The definition of "animal" outside scientific usage varies, but may or may not include bugs. Regardless, starting from the scientific meaning doesn't lead where you end up, as it would actually include way more than bugs.

Well, I'm only one voter, and I have been wrong before. Other voters will decide it one way or the other.

Could be I misunderstand. Still, this is way too broad. "Is there any other game that works like game X" is always going to be too broad, for the reasons in the meta I linked to.

That is the kind of commentary I was thinking should be in the answer.
