Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR and expanded my horizons from there. Fond of GMless and short-form games that suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

I imagine there must be a TV Tropes trope that matches; if so, they always have a ridiculously extensive mediography you could draw from.

comment What should I do about a not-so-good dungeon master?
@JohnP He said "makes his character totally OP", meaning over-powered. I'm more wondering why the DM has a "his character" in the first place. To clarify: user11575, does the DM also run a personal player-character, like the rest of the players do? Or are you talking about just other characters in the world being all overpowered?

@KRyan Though it's somewhat difficult to disprove a negative, you're right that some indication of an attempt was missing, and I edited in what I could on that count.

@Dakeyras Unfortunately, every RPG has these, so it's rather hard to explain them by example. I've tried by comparing this particular one to setting details, and how that's actually not any different from every other bit of setting work that a GM does in a published world.

comment What books should I buy to play with an average D&D group?
I've found how this question has been handled frustrating, and I think that's because it may be a type of question/problem that we haven't developed clear consensus around. I've started a meta here to discuss this (possible) subtype of XY problem questions.

revised What books should I bring with me to my first gaming session?
the actual problem (new player prep for a first 3.5e session) is not system-agnostic or relevant to every edition of D&D, so removing those tags
