Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

comment AD&D 1e and “Skill Checks”
A related question (coming from the other direction) about such checks in AD&D 2e, which is not very different from 1e in this regard (some would argue not at all), and may be helpful: In AD&D 2e, is there a system that roughly equates to spot checks in 3.x? I wouldn't say this is a duplicate though, because they are different games, even if they're very close on this point.

comment What happens to a levitating character catching something heavy in 2nd Edition D&D?
@TimothyAWiseman *shrug* The stance that, if the spell doesn't say it does that, it doesn't, seems fairly commonsense. Given the way AD&D spells in general are fairly comprehensive in their fictional effects (as opposed to mechanical), I do think that's the most reasonable and faithful-to-the-game interpretation. GMs can make up whatever, of course, but deciding that a point on which the spell is silent should contain something fantastical, and making it up, is adding something new that wasn't there.

comment What are the advantages of AD&D over D&D3?
@TheSpooniest 2e added many more customisation options, even in just the PHB, but especially if you consider the supplements. It also added point-buy stats as an option. You could play it very much like 1e, but the defaults were much more like 3e and gave much of the same ability to tune and tweak a new PC "for success" before play even started.

comment Can a Magic User cast 'Illusion Disguise' on someone even though they don't agree with it
@EFH Not in GURPS (barring the usual GM powers to change that, of course). Same page cited above: even unconscious subjects can resist a Resisted spell.

Very nice, concise summary. And without getting into value judgements! I'm impressed, and I now feel no need to write an answer of my own despite this subject being near and dear to my heart.

comment Running a campaign alternating GMs every session
This says that it can be done, but only gives hints for how rather than provides a clear answer for how to accomplish it. Could you expand this into more of an answer of substance?

comment Spell placement on a grid, and possibly the differences between “Effect” and “Area”
There is actually a RAW answer for barriers: area effects are always placed on the grid intersections (straight or diagonally). See Area in the Spell Descriptions section of the SRD.

comment Dealing with Character Advancement in a Game with Rotating GM's
Another related question, that is explicitly Fate + rotating GMs, and has one answer dealing with advancement: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/9266/… . Though, I do think this question is much better focused / more tightly scoped than that one.

comment Can Bards attack while Performing?
@NetHacker One answer has come from a "the rules as written is the alpha and omega" perspective, and another has come from the "where the rules are silent, whatever is fictional plausible is how it works" perspective. (This is a major split in the RPG community.) Which answer resonates with you will entirely depend on what perspective you personally use to approach roleplaying games.

comment Can Bards attack while Performing?
What I don't get is that you do explain it plausibly (miming, dancing, singing, etc. while in a fight) and then say that this doesn't make sense, so *wavey hands* magic! Huh? There's no need to introduce "we don't know, it doesn't matter how, that's just them screwy rules for ya! and anyway: magic-world-fallacy!" into the answer...

comment Can Bards attack while Performing?
Some non-central bits of this answer are going to annoy people who cares about associated mechanics, hence these comments. In addition, just because the world is fantastic doesn't mean we don't expect things to respect our suspension of disbelief. We have buy-in to magic; that doesn't mean we have buy-in to any random nonsense.

comment How can I challenge my players with something other than combat?
This video I just watched seems particularly relevant. It's not an answer, but provides some tools/terminology/framework for considering the problem of unwanted combat-heavy gameplay. It might help you refine the question.

comment What can someone with the Beast Master edge command their dog to do?
Are you referring to the Beast Master (no "y") Edge in the core book, or to a different Beast Mastery (with "y") Edge in some supplement?
