Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

comment Is this the correct damage roll for ranged weapons?
I've found PCGen to be quite stable and reliable, but the user interface is special, to say the least. It makes human error very easy.

comment Easy-to-learn system that supports one-on-one play
@AlexP Ouch. Ouch ouch. I was letting the publisher coast on their decent job on Spears of the Dawn and never looked close at Scarlet Heroes. What the hell went wrong there?! Offensive setting info doesn't ever need to hit the table, sure, but it can't be stripped out of the actual book you have to read and use...

comment What do books have over the SRD?
I'd be happy to see this reopened if it was narrowed down to the specific d20-based game+SRD that Marshall is contemplating / has been avoiding.

comment Essential Reading for New GM/DM
I believe this is a poor fit for RPG.SE. The trouble is that there is no such thing as "essential" reading for a new GM, but everyone has an opinion on what's good to read. (And purely opinion-based stuff is off-topic for important reasons.)

comment What is a good free, short, linear RPG intro game?
(Unfortunately there are many hundreds of such short-form RPGs, so I wouldn't know where to begin to recommend just one. Googling "short form" rpg may help.)

I think there may be a bit of an XY problem thing happening here. I see a question asking for something very specific (a certain kind of RPG system) but it's not obvious why that specific thing is being requested. So, I suspect there might be a deeper problem that you're aiming to solve, but only asking us for help with the partial solution you've already come up with, instead of with the core problem. I'm not sure where I'm steering either; I'm trying to figure out what the underlying problem is. :)

Those are difficulties, yes. But then, is there any reason why you're not asking for help with that, instead? I know that some RPGs are designed to be short one-shot games with a built-in scenario – is that the sort of thing you're asking about?

What specifically are you looking for in an RPG system recommendation that isn't answered by "use a short/intro published adventure for your preferred RPG"?
