Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Have been playing and GMing D&Ds from B/X to D&D 5e. Becoming a fan of indie games and the OSR in the mid 2000s expanded my horizons for both trad and indie games. Fond of GMless and short-form games that suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

comment Why are curative spells referred to as necromancy?
@GMJoe Ah, right! I stand corrected.

comment Why are curative spells referred to as necromancy?
@GMJoe That's not accurate. In 2e Healing is its own domain and contains the usual cure spells, and the Necromantic domain only gets the disease/affliction cures, raise dead, and the re(gen/incarnate/etc.) quartet. (Necromancy has no "cure" spells at all, because mages don't.)

comment Where do I find the “Specific beats general” rule?
Note that, regarding the last paragraph, the rule does not appear to exist in 3.5e either.

comment How can I get Sharpie off my d6s?
The question mentions having tried wood alcohol without success; this answer should indicate how grain alcohol would be any different.

comment Why does the experience-to-next-level not change between some levels?
@GMNoob Here's the tweet: "Level 10 - 11 XP: It's by design. Data shows campaigns stop at 10, we're trying to speed up 10+ a bit so groups can reach 20 in a campaign" (Mike Mearls) So the the dip and the flattening both serve the purpose of accelerating the final climb to 20.

comment Who actually is Tucker?
Considering Tucker is a private individual, this is probably as good as it should get unless Tucker decides to drop by in person.

comment What role-playing game tactically simulates basketball?
@GMJoe That would be an answer to a different question, though. This is specifically a game-rec question.

comment What role-playing game tactically simulates basketball?
@gomad Basketball RPG doesn't exist, so there will be no detailed rules for specifically passing, blocking, guarding, jumping, or dunking. Those physical actions modelled by a simulation-friendly RPG are the best we'll get. I think experience using such a game to model other competitive sports with similar specific-action-modelling needs is actually an excellent answer in the best spirit of our game-rec rules, so this gets an enthusiastic +1 from me.

comment What role-playing game tactically simulates basketball?
@nvoigt Downvotes perhaps, but the dogfighting game-rec was never in danger of being closed. In both cases, replacing "stab them with swords/guns" as the detailed conflict activity shouldn't cause anyone confusion over how it could still be an RPG.

comment What role-playing game tactically simulates basketball?
@nvoigt A game that focuses on detailed combat would also best be implemented as a cooperative board game or computer game. Yet we manage to make RPGs out of such core activities just fine. I don't think this needs such clarification, even if the examples provided awesome up the answer significantly.
