Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

Yes, this is asking about precise math. Your question requires multiplication and division, which enlarges errors and estimation/rounding effects, which can only be fixed by carefully controlling your input data's precision. This question is attempting to be a statistical analysis, but it's making fatal statistical errors that answerers are unable to fix for you because the correct data doesn't exist yet.

comment Why is there a saving throw for each ability score?
Dominate Person is an attempt to overcome the target's willpower, not their personality. Possession means literal bodily possession by an invading personality, by a demon or artifact for example, which is a battle where the strongest ego (Charisma) wins.

You can't ask a question about precise math using non-final rules under the 5e tag.

I'm not concerned trolling you, I'm concerned about site management. I'm saying the question is fatally flawed twice and should stay closed. Wait for the DMG.

Using those completely invalidates the question. First, you are you trying to do decimal-precision math with rules that say "Warning: These are not final rules." That's enough to make it unaskable and unanswerable by itself. But second, you've misread these rules as being prescriptive rules (DMs should do Y, the adventuring day consists of X) when they're actually descriptive measurement tools (if you do X, Y is what you should expect; do whatever you want with that knowledge). That makes the model you've constructed not match the actual game rules, making any conclusion irrelevant.

@Robert The difference goes deeper. You don't automatically get the Int check—you have to actively interact with the illusion in a way that might uncover it. Saves are reactive and always "happen to" the PC, while checks are active as the result of the PC's efforts.

comment How do I make random adventures relevant to player motivations in a Sandbox Hexcrawl Campaign?
@G0BLiN During planning is the right time to ask this, but after having a problem with it, not before even trying to prepare this material. We don't accept questions about hypothetical problems, only real ones. As this question demonstrates, hypothetical problems are usually poorly described or not described at all, making them unclear at best. And then, a solution to a hypothetical problem can't be tested, so voting itself becomes based on hypothetical solutions to hypothetical problems, and the system fails to function. So we only accept problems about real problems actually being faced.

Where are you getting encounter XP numbers from? (Playtest material is not relevant, and if these numbers are from the playtest you appear to have misread the the guidelines in any case.)

@Robert Detecting an illusion's illusory nature is an Intelligence (Investigation) skill check, not a save. See Major Image as an example.

That doesn't answer the question I asked. What prep have you tried? How did/didn't it work? I'm trying to find out what efforts to confirm the problem's existence and details you've made, if any, before bringing this to SE. If we don't even know for sure if the problem exists, we have no hope of solving it.

@waxeagle The explanation for the 3.5 reference was in there but easy to miss. I edited it to make it really obvious, as all mentions of other editions should be in a rules answer.

@Molot Hold Person is a mind-affecting spell and doesn't use force. Thunderwave's effect includes damage (from concussive force, not just falling down), which makes no sense to resist using Strength. Looks like the current spell saves are what they should be.

This might be something to try before assuming it will be a problem during prep and play. What have you tried during prep? How did it fail to provide tie-ins to the PCs' backgrounds?
