Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

What year did you start playing D&D? Was it a new issue when you read it, or a well-worn one? If you can remember both of those, it could narrow it down a lot.

What this stance is missing is that the system has been essentially unmodified for decades, and has been rather adequate during the times when the IP owners did take these things seriously. If it was adequate then for taking-seriousness, and hasn't changed, then the assertion that it's now somehow inadequate doesn't have basis.

How far along is this campaign? Just started, ten sessions, two?

@Zibbobz That's probably the 2nd pic then. This link should work if you can access Google.

@Zibbobz Is it one of these over-encumbered Links? The bottom one with the ladder looks about right.

Remember that encumbrance in D&D is not strictly a measure of carrying-weight capacity even though it's listed in pounds; it's a combination of weight and bulk/awkwardness that you can carry. Even a grappling hook made with pre-modern materials science doesn't weigh 4lbs, but it's bulky and awkward to stow, and the multiplied encumbrance cost of one reflects that.

This is an excellent point. It could be expanded a bit to adapt its lesson to the different context of an adventurer though (soldiers don't tend to carry about bear traps, 10' poles, and sacks of gold).
