Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Started playing with AD&D 1e and GMing with AD&D 2e. Ran D&D 3.x, 4e briefly, then became a fan of indie games and the OSR. Particularly fond of GMless and short-form games because they suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

Yeah. Self-analysis mid-game is hard to impossible. It's all about the post-mortems.

What about the self-analysis techniques the question is about? We have lots of questions about GMing best-practices that this isn't a duplicate of.

Yes, but we can't read your mind. :) If you can put what you mean into the question, then more readers will understand what you're asking about.

Wow, that's a super-obscure location for something that would be widely-known by people in the setting.

comment How can I justify complete failure of an elven village's magic as a plot point?
@Tridus A compromise: stick 'em both on there. :) There is some precedent for mixing system and system-agnostic tags, because it makes them searchable/highlightable to prospective answerers, even though they seem contradictory.

@Tridus That might be begging the question though. Answering with specific mechanics is only one way to solve this problem, but changing the tags makes it require system-specific mechanics. That kind of choosing the criteria for acceptable answers is the asker's prerogative. We shouldn't change that unless it's necessary to keep the question on topic, and that's not the case here.

comment Are there any RPGs that realistically prioritize speed and reach in melee?
@GMNoob It's not assumption of any size. That's based on observations by the network devs, and the many failed experiments and subsequent bans across the SE network. Here we have a carefully negotiated and re-negotiated compromise that we'd really like to stick to so we don't have to ban recommendations like the others have.

@Tridus I just killed the [campaign-dev] tag on this before your edit, since the question isn't about campaign development except for the trivially-true fact that adventures can be part of campaigns. Check the edit history when editing tags. :)

Keep in mind that as DM, you create the world, including previous-unknown magical effects with it. You're not limited to the PHB spells and DMG magic items. You've got some good answers to that effect below already, but it's worth underlining that point, in case it's giving you cognitive dissonance: you get to make new things up.

comment Is there a OGL or GSL license for D&D 5e?
@tex Maybe, but as it's a tangent to the question an answer isn't obliged to cover fair use, nominative use, Kenzer Co., TSR v. Mayfair Games, etc. You might want to write such an answer though. :)

That "Play for Free" Wikihow article is way out of date, talking about a D&D 3.5e demo that no longer exists.
