Roleplayer, lapsed blogger, and full-time dad.

Have been playing and GMing D&Ds from B/X to D&D 5e. Becoming a fan of indie games and the OSR in the mid 2000s expanded my horizons for both trad and indie games. Fond of GMless and short-form games that suit a busy schedule and are good for enticing non-gamers into the hobby.

comment What role-playing game tactically simulates basketball?
@gomad Basketball RPG doesn't exist, so there will be no detailed rules for specifically passing, blocking, guarding, jumping, or dunking. Those physical actions modelled by a simulation-friendly RPG are the best we'll get. I think experience using such a game to model other competitive sports with similar specific-action-modelling needs is actually an excellent answer in the best spirit of our game-rec rules, so this gets an enthusiastic +1 from me.

@nvoigt Downvotes perhaps, but the dogfighting game-rec was never in danger of being closed. In both cases, replacing "stab them with swords/guns" as the detailed conflict activity shouldn't cause anyone confusion over how it could still be an RPG.

@nvoigt A game that focuses on detailed combat would also best be implemented as a cooperative board game or computer game. Yet we manage to make RPGs out of such core activities just fine. I don't think this needs such clarification, even if the examples provided awesome up the answer significantly.

this is a group- and plot-management question in which system is not relevant except as background (we don't tag for background, just problems)

Answerers, remember that the GS/BS guide linked in the banner requires that you have done this or something extremely similar with your suggested game, or can link to the experience of someone who has.

If your third point is truly relevant, why would only one optional pact for one class provide a solution to that issue?

comment How do I read 2d10 as a percentage?
@aslum There is a single conventional way. That anyone has come up with the alternative described in this answer surprises me, but on careful reading it is mathematically the same. Turns out, there is more than one right way (even if the other right way is much more complicated than it's worth, to my mind).

While this may theoretically answer the question elsewhere, it would be preferable to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link only for reference. Without that kind of "value add," we have to treat link-only answers like this as spam.

Sounds like you have the same problem as in How can I make my PCs flee?: your players are assuming nothing exists outside the encounter design guidelines and are metagaming on their assumption (with eventually fatal consequences).

@Javelin If people can't answer a question without the asker pasting in the rules they're asking about, they have no business answering the question.
