I am an avid RP and tabletop gamer, currently designing a tabletop skirmish game of my own. It is a hobby of mine to sit down with a core book for a game and decipher its system.

In 7th Sea they have a Campaign Handout that you can use to get a sense of what the players want. It's fairly game neutral when it comes down to it. Since hotlinking doesn't work as well in comment: alderac.com/7thsea/resources/7thsea-gmcampaignsetuphandout.pdf

My problem is that my players don't usually have backstories to work with until they play the characters for a couple sessions. Especially with how the group meshes this gets muddy.

+1, on ad hoc game sessions I have fallen into the "what do you guys want to do" trap.

I agree. When I run games, the plots have s central stem, which could be considered the rails but I have no problem with the players walking from station to station instead of riding the express.

comment Cost of 1 cargo provision in 7th sea
I cited my figures. 1 week of jerky for one person is 1g according to the book. I suppose the only thing that would be missing is the cost of water in addition to that, but otherwise it's all there. Now there was a Dinner for 4 option and a banquet option but they were more costly than the good meal per capita.

comment How do I build Riddick?
Multiclassing (IMHO) just messes with your skills, which at higher level you have to max out to stand a chance against any comparable adversary.

The only traits the car would really need to have would be around durability and maneuverability since the rest is up to the driver. If you really want to have fun with it, you could call a vehicle a form of "Borrowed Power".

comment Game with Interesting Combat that is Crunch Heavy and is built to not Require a Grid?
Every roll in Unisystem is based on Margins of Success/Failure so when you get into a combat and you succeed by certain amounts and get instant injuries/kills. I've played their All Flesh Must Be Eaten setting personally and it's easy to pick up. There is also a Cinematic System from them if you want to get all John Woo on things.
