Um. I am totally new to RPGs. I've only participated in ten or so campaigns. I suck as a player. My suckiness is magnified a thousand times over when I try to be a DM, or whatever you call it. Fortunately, I have patient friends.

I write the campaigns I run. I suck at that, too.

comment How do you generate reasonable prices for goods and services not listed in the PHB?
Wow. That link is great! I love the idea of using syllables to determine things. I have long had a theory that NFL quarterbacks who have more syllables in their first name than their last are destined to bust. Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf, David Carr, etc. Yes, Warren Moon is the exception. Lesson: If you want to be an NFL quarterback and you have more syllables in your first name than your last, you first have to go win five Canadian Football League championships. (Sorry, this is off-topic. Great link, though.)

comment How do I promote my gaming campaigns?
It would also be helpful to know what options each site provides for you to recruit players. How are you using those resources? What response have you gotten so far? It's going to be hard to give advice without knowing what you're already doing. It seems like you're asking what you can do right, without allowing for what you might be doing wrong. I don't mean that to sound insulting, but Jadasc is right, more information would help others provide useful answers.

comment How do I calculate the value of items?
Ha! You're right, I shouldn't give him anything else, but it's a duet campaign. My Pc is traveling alone and needs some cool stuff to allow him to survive. When I tell him what he can get for the gear he thinks is super-valuable (3gp), I'm guessing he'll have second thoughts. Thanks for your response.

comment Point buy/structured system for cooperative 4e campaign building?
Building on Jason's answer, I could see where, if I were a member of your group, I would appreciate some heads-up regarding the attributes of other countries. This may ruin surprises in some ways, but if I knew one of the other city creators had focused on technology, I could not only focus my country's skills elsewhere, I might work in a story regarding why my country developed "X" in response to the other country's "Y." In the character-building analogy, this could help avoid that uncomfortable situation in which all the players show up to the new game having created rogue strikers.

comment What to do when your PCs skip an important part of the story line
The NPC has suspiciously not left his farm in over a year. The NPC is leading the protest against the loggers, ostensibly because it's effecting hunting in the wooded areas, but actually because he doesn't want anyone to log close enough to discover his mine. The PC's motivation (admittedly not strong enough) was his suspicions of the NPC. The NPC was mining in secret because his intention was actually to dig a tunnel into an otherwise unapproachable area and capture a giant spider. If townsfolk knew the NPC was digging a direct path from the spider lair to town, they would not be pleased.

Awesome advice. Thanks.
