comment Is it possible to produce a bowl-shaped probability curve with dice rolls?
Ricky: I think that's a great improvement, with the adding and 21 cutoff. Form improves the function.

Keep me posted, Soulrift. If it doesn't pan out I try scratching my brain for another answer.

And let me say that your method, Ricky, makes a lot of sense. @Soulrift: If you test either/both methods I'd be interesting for a shout-out as to how manageable it is for a game. My group plays all of their games online (due to geography issues) so I never see the practical side of dealing with dice. Just curiosity on my part.

That's a great idea. I'll update my answer to reflect that, Sage.

comment How do I help my players figure out how to stay alive in a realistically-deadly sandbox campaign?
Sardathrion has it. After reading the question it seems this is a root issue rather than a "what tips and tricks can I apply to fix it?" question. By having threats as illogical, emotional this introduces natural interesting flaws and removes the aspect of perfect threats. The heroes can avoid and exploit these weaknesses in a way that should be interesting by the nature of the flaw.

I didn't like my phrasing and some examples I gave.
