comment How can DMs effectively telegraph specific dangers in D&D?
+1 I like this answer the best, because it is structured. Like linux philosophy preaches, one can read the five bullet points and use them as ideas; but one can also read the whole post and get more insight.

comment What to do when a player character does something that seems suicidal?
Clearly, I should have asked her "Why would your character want to do that?" ;(

comment How many spears can fit in one pincushion
This reminds me of that time I asked on an rpg forum "What are the penalties of shooting a gun through your buddy's shoulder." "Huge" - was the answer - "try shooting around his shoulder."

A phalanx of ghosts that pass through walls and hills? If the spears are not magical, I guess they will be able to just stab through their buddies, instead of overhead. Then we can have a line of bowmen behind them, shooting through them (and not overhead). ...

+1 for speaking from your experience. 104 spearmen would not even see the target (maybe transparent spearmen? ).

comment I am looking for a game to ease my friends into role playing
+1 for suggesting lightweight rules. I was going to write an answer to suggest a one-off freeform session because (1) it is flexible about commited time and (2) if they are board game players, they need to see exactly what roleplay is - later they will be fluent with the rules, but starting with a heavy rule-based game might incline the players to roll back to what they know - board games - and neglect the roleplaying aspect. However, your post describes similar situation much better taht how I would have expressed it.
