What analyses exist of capitalist economies in “modern” setting RPGs? There's a gap between the work of MM Postan and suggesting we replace a gp payouts with an sp payouts. That gap seems to be filled with analysis of fantasy medieval economics in RPGs. Similarly there seems to be a gap between Marx, Keynes or Hayek and Pentex Corporation, or of the price of Miniguns in corporate warfare, or of the story purpose and impact of modern fiscally motivated adventuring and loot payoffs. I'm not aware of who fills this gap. |

How can you translate Rashomon/The Rashomon Job into a one-off-game? "As the players listen to each other's stories, the subjective consensus tends to converge on an accepted reality." It may be possible to work around this by framing the play in a different genre. RPG tends to use journalistic or realist novel modes. Boasting sessions encourage participants to accept, extend and elaborate past contributions; for a modern example, the rap battle. Shifting from a naïve representational mode of literature, to a competitive mode (at the literary level) may help. "Well he said he gone done murdered me but I playin' possum, haw." |

How could towns restrain a magic user? This makes me wonder about hierarchies of wizards. Hopefully either your thaumonoumenal priests are restrained by an ethics, or declared "Evil: on sight." Wizards are depicted either as loners in towers, or in University. This makes me think that the average collation of Wizards looks more like a series of Oz than Unseen U. |
