I've been playing Dungeons and Dragons (v 3.5) on and off now for about 10 years. Although I consider myself a novice DM and prefer playing to refereeing, DMing is most of what I do these days. I've slowly been building up reputation here by almost exclusively asking the somewhat obvious questions easily cleared up by the sites more experienced players, and hope to someday be knowledgeable enough to start answering some. That will likely involve branching out into some new RPGs, be it Pathfinder, or one of the FATE systems. If you have a system you'd like to trumpet the merits of, feel free to convince me the next time we bump into each other in chat.

+1 for the two-part encounter idea, giving the players both their "armour satisfaction" and a real challenge! I will use this advice.

An accurate observation, but I am trying to work with something the players are stoked about, as opposed to just taking it away for the sake of correcting my own mistake :) I have considered the use of monsters that work with touch attacks instead ....

Very true - realism is not a major feature of Eberron, but I like to add "medieval flavour" whenever the opportunity presents itself :)

+1 for the suggestion of having the inter-party issue being secondary to the main story :)

+1 for the concept of having open secrets and player buy-in. Yours is probably the "best" advice (and answers my original question in a way I hadn't considered), but I, like a fool, am going to try the "closed secrets model" based on the fact that the players have already bought in to a lot of note-passing during the average game, and some folks here have made some good suggestions as to how it might work :)

I appreciate your observation that trying to artificially set up the factions is likely a bad idea - I will definitely avoid this, although I am too tempted to leave the within-party intrigue alone altogether, even if it does "screw" party cohesion. Let's just hope the damage isn't permanent ;)
