I'm a Master of Information, an MMORPG expert, and in my spare time I dabble in Dungeons and Dragons, mainly 4th edition. I secretly aspire to re-write 4e into AD&D 4.5 and fix all those niggly issues I have with it.

I disagree. I think a skill challenge should only be used in order to advance the plot. You should never use a device as complex as a skill challenge when there is the outcome of a null possibility. You should never go through all that role-play and dice rolling and say "Oops, you rolled badly, the end. No treasure for you."

One unofficial alternative I've used is a challenge that requires players to reach a certain "total" of skill rolls. For example, a locked door that requires a total of 100 thievery to unlock it. Players can make thievery checks as standard actions on their turn, but the monsters are attacking them. They have the choice of fighting and leaving the check until after the battle (auto-success, no thievery rolls) or trying to unlock it to evade the monsters (requires standard actions and multiple rolls). Is this what you're looking for?

It is worth pointing out that while it may seem intuitive that lines of sight traced through obscured squares (especially when described as "heavy fog") should be in some way affected, they are not. Thus, even if there is a wall of heavy fog causing total obscurement in those squares between you and a target, you actually see that target just fine!

comment Can Oath of Enmity and Divine Challenge be stacked on the same target?
Clarification: Oath of Enmnity is not a Mark and never Marks the target. "Mark" is a glossary term and should only be used when a power explicit states "Marks the target", not to refer to things tracked with tokens or markers. Even if Wizards releases little tokens including one that says "Avenger Mark" do not let yourself be confused ;)

comment Targetting empty squares for area burst attacks?
I think he's confusing the Wizard spellbook class feature that allows them to take two of each daily power and utility power, and specify which spell they "memorize" each day. At level 5, for example, they'll have 4 daily powers and can use two of them per day (one of the two level 1s, one of the two level 5s).

comment How can I tune encounter difficulty appropriately in D&D Essentials?
Note that the vast majority of published adventures assume 5 PCs, not 2, so a quick rule of thumb will be to slash 3/5ths of monsters. EG: eliminate one goblin and turn the two wolves into two-hit minions (with fixed, lower damage).
