I remember checking out the AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide from the library when I was a wee one and photocopying some of the pages. I've been playing RPGs ever since. :) Most of my experience is as a DM/ST. I've run D&D 2nd Edition and 3.0/3.5, as well as most of the oWoD lines. I'm currently interest in OSR stuff, having chosen Basic Fantasy as my 'poison.'

How do you make a new NPC likable? How set are you on the storyline that the PCs 'have' to bring her home? If you make her likeable enough, they're going to do everything in their power to stop what is happening. Is that totally off the table? |

How can I motivate my fellow players? +1 for Social time and Recaps. My main gaming group uses the first 30 minutes of each session to chat, eat and/or level up their characters before playing. It definitely helps. |

Rules for increasing ability scores in Basic D&D? I really like the UA fractional ability scores, so I'll definitely keep that mind. The "Landmark Levels" also fit in with some other rules I had in mind, so maybe a combination of the two would be best. Something like, every time you level, you get 2d10 fractional ability points, but at certain levels you get a straight +1 as well. Abilities would be hard capped at 18 or as per your race. |

Rules for increasing ability scores in Basic D&D? Thanks. I'm curious; Is this a house rule or is it adapted from somewhere. |

Rules for increasing ability scores in Basic D&D? @SevenSidedDie Thanks. The only two items giving ability scores bonuses in Basic Fantasy are the Gauntlets of Ogre Power and the Girdle of Giant Strength. I could port in all of the Periapts, Headbands, Cloaks, etc from 3.5, but I prefer to stay away from magical items and wishes if possible. |

Rules for increasing ability scores in Basic D&D? @SevenSidedDie We are playing the Basic Fantasy retro clone. It uses a simplified version of D&D 3.5's ability modifiers. When we generated ability scores, the players rolled 3d6 in order to create their characters. Now that they have a littler experience under their belts, they are looking for ways to increase things like Strength for to hit and damage bonuses, Dexterity to add to AC/Init, and Charisma to add to reaction checks. |

My players almost die in my encounters every time. Does this mean my encounters are too hard? Corrected spelling |

How does a DM correct the balance after accidentally giving the players too much gold? I'm the one that asked the question that inspired this one, and I'm going to solve it in a very D&D oriented way: RUST MONSTERS! |

How to communicate to the players that an encounter can be solved also through diplomacy? At least one version of the D&D rules (3.5) explicitly states that XP should be awarded for overcoming encounters through diplomacy/trickery, not just for combat. |

How to communicate to the players that an encounter can be solved also through diplomacy? @briddums That's a really bad idea. As a player, there is very little that's more infuriating than a situation where we "cannot win" by DM fiat. Maybe a better idea would be to see an NPC party talk their way out of a jam. |
