How to Handle a Powergamer / Munchkin To expand on the "Does he know it's a problem" part of this answer: It is important that all of the players and the GM are on the same page as to what type of game will be played as well a what type of characters will be created. In this case, this situation is not a PC problem, it is a player problem. Player problems should be dealt with in the real world, not in the game world. |

As a complete newcomer - what do I have to look out for? Depending on your groups abilities at listening to spoken english, it might be worthwhile digging up the Wizards of the Coast 4E podcasts with the crew from Penny Arcade and PvP. It is, IMO, a nice introduction into the game and Chris Perkins (the DM) leads the players through a nice intro to all of the rules. The videocast with Chris Perkins and the cast of Robot Chicken is also a real good introduction to the game. |

Stopping rule questions from overrunning encounters Depending on the system, you can usually work out a quick bonus/penalty that is appropriate for most situations if you are not sure exactly how much you should give. For example, in D&D 3.5, a +2/-2 bonus/penalty is usually appropriate and isn't completely unbalancing if you get the ruling wrong. |

How do you keep the party on the map? To expand on the last comment, it is also very acceptable, if your players go somewhere you weren't expecting, to tell them to give you a couple minutes. "I wasn't expecting you guys to go there. Can you give me 10 minutes to set it up?" If your players are at all decent folk, they will either say yes, or change their mind, letting you know that they plan on going there eventually. |
