Someone tried to talk down about my DM knowledge because I ran Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil as it was written - blue dragon in a swamp area and all, with no deserts anywhere around. But -1 for encouraging bad talk against his player.

5h	comment	How do I make skill checks more than just sequences of die chucking? @boriscallens: this is arguably done to avoid smarter players from winning all challenges and dumber ones from losing them outright (you still play the challenge, even in front of good ideas) but more so for avoiding a DM that uses challenges as a "roll stealth once more (till you fail)" railroading. Upon a set numeber of wins, you get the objective.

Not enough "good" subjective to be the real answer, but it's different games by different people using the same brand and some sacred cows for marketing reasons. I feel like 4e would bw a lot more appreciated if they didn't sell it as "D&D".

While everything in D&D 3.5 is DM discretion, by the rules any creature with LA is buildable as a PC (most DM will have a limited selection of races for their campaign or a maximum LA limit for character creation) and creatures with LA "-" (which is different from LA 0) are banned. Since it's D&D, any willing DM can create new player races from scratch or from monster races. Since this is not a forum but a Q&A site I invite you to come to the chat if you want to further discuss things that are outside of the scope of the question.
May 14	comment	What is the LA when only the ECL is listed? Anything without a LA is not meant for player use. A Drow elf has a LA af 2, it is supposed to be as powerful as a character with 2 more HD. An Earth Elemental has a LA of -, it can't be used by players, unless the DM decides a LA and overrides the monster's statblock.

May 11	comment	Calculating attack bonuses when fighting with two rapiers I would suggest the Oversized 2 Weapon Fighting feat to get rid of the -2 penalty from the non-light weapon. @vsz the character has probably all his feats set on rapiers.
