D&D Hall of Fame (in which Zachiel talks about how campaigns usually die early):

Singhi's 3e campaign - started at 1000 xp, vanished into nothingness at 2995 xp.
Paolo's 3e short adventure - too much DMPCing.
Luca's 3e campaign - started as a CoDM-PC, made a PC shortly after. Still no level ups.
My 3e campaign - aborted three rooms from the end.
Marco's 3.5 7-PCs-campaign - aborted for scheduling problems. Still no level ups.
Marco's intro to RttToEE - gave DMing right to me after 2 sessions. Arbitrary leveling up between those.
My 3.5 Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil - TPK'ed at level 8/9.
Marco's 3.5 all manuals campaign - aborted for excessive PC firepower. Guess what.
Marco's 3.5 premade characters campaign - aborted after less than 10 minutes of play.
Pierluigi's 4e Keep on the Shadowfell - gave DMing rights to me before I could level.
My 3.5 Expedition to the Demonweb Pits - Completed!
My 3.0 City of the Spider Queen - Completed!
My 4e Keep on the Shadowfell - Completed!
Cau's 3.5 Daemonfey Apocalypse campaign. First true level up ever! Aborted right after that.
My 3.5 Expedition to Undermountain - aborted when we got a 4e group again.
My 4e Thunderspire Labyrinth - Completed!
My 4e Pyramid of Shadows - Ongoing

As your problem is a general problem that's true for all of WotC's 3.5e pages, I'm removing tome-of-battle, hoping to attract more people.

comment How can I make a Pathfinder campaign like the Monster Hunter video game series?
D&D isn't "the best start" exactly because it's the grandfather of RPGs. Almost every edition was written with the assumption that you came from a wargame background, or from previous D&D edition, and have some idea about how the game has to be played and how to make it click. Not every non-D&D game is made for RPG newbies, but some do go great lenghts to explain the mindset, the scope and the techniques needed to enjoy it. (Asking for a game that does this might be a good idea.) D&D is just the 800 pound gorilla, and every edition I know rewards mastery of a huge, "shopping list" game system.

comment Is there a rules light game which supports classless characters, simple and tactical combat, and the game master running a GMPC?
I understand your concern with "we're too few and we need a third PC so I, as the Dm will play one". Are games that are viable with only two playing characters a good alternative to "give me a game where I can have a GMPC"?

comment 20 foot square versus a 20 foot circle on a battle mat
@Betsy those circles and squares seem made according to D&D 3.5e rules: start from a grid intersection and go from intersection to intersection, counting twice every other diagonal (so the distance on the major diagonal is 1/23/4/56 totalling 6 units over 4 diagonals. Of course the semplification isn't perfect.

Be aware that magic missile has been errataed to a very different version to cater to "magic missile always hits" 3.x edition fans. Which version are you asking about?

comment How can an aristocracy be perpetuated between creatures that can't interbreed?
@HeyICanChan Well I guess it's for lost limbs and ritual-usable blood and hair. Polymorph says nothing on the matter so we need to look at alter self, which has: "Any part of the body or piece of equipment that is separated from the whole reverts to its true form."

That book is not official. Being focused on intercourse, I stongly suspect its crossbreeding rules are intentionally wider than it's true for regular D&D.

Using polymorph on our paladin isn't going to work. Anything being detached from the polymorphed body returns to the original form, including you-guessed-what. And the original form of that is not going to work, per the querent's assumption of those creatures being not able to sire a son with a human. Ellesedil's suggestion works better (was it changelings that can't change sex during pregnancy if they don't want to lose the baby?)

comment Is the Dweomerkeeper unacceptably powerful thanks to Supernatural Spell?
Note that epic spells are not spells in the traditional sense. They just share the name.

comment How to Make the Math Easier?
Good advice, but you ned to check your lingo. Wisdom DC saves are a 5e thing, 4e has either "saves" or "vs. Will attacks".

comment How to Make the Math Easier?
I have a player who's good at math but never knows what adds up to her damage or to hit roll. Pre-calculate might be your solution - if the problem is the same.
